Massive 6.4 Earthquake Between Samothrace & Limnos

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was recorded at 12.25 on Saturday southwest of Alexandroupolis,  between the islands of Limnos and Samothrace.

According to the Geodynamics Institute of Athens and the Geophysics department of Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki the earthquake recorded 6.4 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was said to be located 20 km sorth-southwest of Samothrace and 296 km north-northwest of Athens. The depth of the quake is suspected of being at 10 km.

Last minute reports claim that two aftershocks measuring 4.7 and 5 on the Richter scale have already been recorded.

The obviously strong earthquake was felt all over Greece, but even neighboring countries suffered from the jolt. Specifically, it was felt in areas such as Evia, Viotia, Evros, Ioannina, Thasos, Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, and even as far south as Athens. It was also felt in neighboring Turkey and Bulgaria and according to some press reports approximately 100 people were injured by it in Turkey alone.

Quoting a report from Protothema news we discovered that damages were reported at Limnos’ airport where a British tourist was slightly injured. Damages were also recorded at the Archaeological Museum of Myrina and some buildings.

HellasFrappe will follow the story throughout Saturday and if there are any developments we will continue to update the article.
