Tzeni Vanou Dies From Cancer At The Age of 75 (VIDEOS)

One of Greece's better known singers and all-time beloved voices, Mrs. Tzeni Vanou, died of cancer in the larynx at a Piraeus hospital on Wednesday morning at the age of 75.

Vanou was born on February 10, 1939 in Athens. Her real name is Evgenia Vrachnou. Her first encounter with music began when she met famous composer Mimis Plessas, whom she considered as her all-time mentor. She began her singing career as a vocalist with the ERT light music orchestra in 1959.

Since then, Tzeni Vanou has worked closely with many Greek songwriters, including Mikis Theodorakis and Attik, and singers such as Tolis Voskopoulos and Yannis Vogiatzis, while in the 1970-1980 period she became quite popular for her song "An eine i agapi amartia" (is love a sin).

In August, the famous singer had an operation on her neck in an attempt to remove the tumor.

Her funeral is going to be held at the Nea Smyrni cemetery in southern Athens on Friday.
