Major cases of tax evasion, including cases of undeclared income and illegal trade have been reported by Greece's financial crimes squad (SDOE) while it was conducting crosschecks in January. All cases have now been forwarded to a financial crimes prosecutor. Among those accused are private enterprises, a psychic, higher education institutions, doctors as well as a hospital director. But wait that is not all, by far the most surprising name on the list was that of PAvlos Haikalis, who is an active MP of the Independent Greeks party and one of Greece's better known actors. The reports indicate that Haikalis (who was first elected as a member of Parliament in the May 2012 elections and then re-elected again in the repeat June 2012 elections) did not cut two receipts amounting 55,000 Euros in 2007.
The crosschecks conducted by SDOE in 2013 reveal illegally received subsidies and VAT refunds by farmers amounting to a whopping 54.1 million Euros and tax evasion of 1.7 million Euros committed by a single municipal company. (And to think that the farmers are now "protesting" against being taxed!)
But that is not all, the tax evasion committed by medical doctors totalled some 6.8 million Euros, courier services 3.6 million Euros, pharmacists 2 million Euros, artists 4.2 million Euros, hotels 1.5 million Euros, farm product retailers 9.5 million Euros, commercial store owners 14.3 million Euros and building contractors 23.6 million Euros!
Reports were filed on 215 cases and the fines imposed amounted to more than 211,538,000 Euros.
