SDOE Busts New Counterfeit Cash Register Scam
Greece's Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) has been working on overdrive and it has increased its inspections across the country. The newest report claims that the latest scam craze by some small time tax evaders involves using tampered cash registers to avoid paying Value Added Tax (VAT).
Many businesses, that wanted to appear legitimate, and certainly not attract the attention of authorities, used this cash register which would issue dummy receipts that appear legitimate to unsuspecting customers.
The last instance where this register was used was in Thiva, where SDOE inspectors discovered that the owner of a coffee grinding shop and cafeteria had been using this cash register for the past five years illegally. The business owner had issued 102,977 receipts, for which he never paid any VAT.
Asta la vista. Time to pay up !!!!
