Sakis Mboulas Dies From Cancer At Age 59

Athanasius Mboulas or well known actor and alternative rock musician Sakis Mboulas died on Friday morning (February 21, 2014) at the Ygeia Hospital in Athens after suffering a long battle with cancer. His doctors said that throughout the course of his hospitalization, the charismatic artist, from the popular show 50/50 on MEGA channel, "showed bravery and dignity."

Mboulas was born in Kilkis on March 11, 1954 but his family originated from good old Piraeus, where he later moved and spent all of his childhood years. When he was young, his parents urged him to become a lawyer because he was a great debater, but he chose acting and the music scene instead. At some point in his life he also owned a furniture store, but business was not that great and he continued his career in the entertainment industry.

As an alternative rock entertainer, he also had a "rock" character in real life, and he was unlike many men of his generation. For instance, he hated the concept of marriage, because he argued it trapped people and made them lose their independence. This is probably why he respected free spirits and one of the reasons why he was not married.

Aside from the ever popular 50,50 show on MEGA channel which continues to score high ratings with Greek viewers, Mboulas's musical career was also exceptional. He participated in many recordings such as the "Undelivered Letters" by Michael Gregory with Aphrodite Manou, "Cantata for Makroniso" - Thanos Mikroutsikos, "Lucian's Dialogues" - Mmimis Plessas, "Acharnians" D. Savvopoulos etc.

Here are a few of his personal albums:
  • Mboulas-Hellas (1986)
  • Sakis Mboulas (maxi single) "Ali Baba" (music Michael Rakintzis) (1987).
  • Sakis Mboulas "Be careful" (album) (all the songs from the album were written by Michael Rakintzis) (1987)
  • Zamanfou, (1992).
  • Essay of Ideas by Zouganeli (2000)
He worked alongside Thanos Mikroutsikos for well over 12 years and traveled to various countries with him such as Austria, Germany, England, Scotland, Belgium and Cyprus. He was one of the founders of the first music cafe named "wagtails" where musical theater and live music shows were presented (along with the other founders Yannis Zouganeli, Nikola Asimos, Thanos Adrianos and Periklis Harvas). He followed the same recipe later on in his career with "Ahh Maria", where he collaborated with legendary Vassilis Papakonstantinou, Yannis Zouganeli etc. He performed at numerous concerts and musical shows with Papakonstantinou, Zouganeli, the late Vlassis Bonatsos, Lavrendis Machairitsas, Dimitris Starovas, Dionysis Savvopoulos, etc.

He will be sadly missed.
