Municipal Authorities: Millions Wasted For Funerals & Lingerie

Believe it or not, from the 761 municipalities all over Greece, only 350 have been audited by authorities while the remaining 411 are still till this day operating as they have been for decades. Meaning of course... That what happens in one Greek town, stays in one Greek town, even if this means that taxpayers money is wasted on funerals and lingerie!

According to information that was made public by the Ministry of The Interior it was discovered that municipal authorities have been wasting incredible amounts of money on anything from funerals to lingerie.

The issue was featured by the Ethnos newspaper on Friday and it gave some alarming information about our friendly neighborhood mayors and their entourage of workers.

For instance, in Mantoudi, Evia a loss of 378,000 Euros was discovered by auditors which the municipalities there claim went to lectures, various events and a forest museum (?).

In Grevena auditors discovered a scam of 4.5 million Euros in fake invoices, projects that were never realized, and even invoices for lingerie worth more than 3,088 Euros.

In Kalamaria auditors detected a 2.5 million Euro gap for the five year period 2002-2006 with a scam in payments for coffin carriers and purchases of funeral treats without any documents.

Lastly, the debts in Evosmos to suppliers and employees have exceeded 1.6 million Euros, while in Velos auditors located fake invoices of 2 million Euros that do not even note the name of the contractor or the project that was undertaken.

Of the 12,700 employees working in all these municipal companies, state officials know only about 5,500 and what salary they receive, the rest is a complete BLUR.

The article in Ethnos says that in most cases -where fraud is discovered- the mayors of that town and/or city usually conceal such scandals since they fear that illegal permanence and uncontrollable expenditures will be uncovered.

In fact, when auditors began discovering all their foul play, they quickly began to transfer employees from the municipal businesses to central enterprises to make look as if they had a productive purpose.

Totally pitiful
