The chief engineer of the Greek-owned tanker "Althea", who was kidnapped by pirates 35 nautical miles off the coast of Guinea on December 17, has finally been released, according to an announcement by Medtankers Management Ltd. The Ukrainian captain of the Marshall Islands-flagged ship, who was also kidnapped in the same raid, was also released.
There was no further details given as to whether any ransom had been paid for the release of both hostages.
According to Shipping Ministry, the chief engineer was the only Greek in the 18-member crew. Reports claim that pirates had boarded the ship and kidnapped the 65-year-old Greek seaman and the captain, without hurting the rest of the crew.
