Court Dismisses Appeal Against Gold Mine in Skouries

The Council of State apparently rejected an appeal by residents, farmers and various business owners in Halkidiki against mining activity in the Skouries region.

According to reports, locals had taken legal action in an attempt to stop Hellas Gold (part of Canadian El Dorado) from mining for gold in the area claiming that the mine would damage forest land in the area as well as cause widespread environmental damage.

Greece's highest administrative court rejected their appeal and ruled that the project was in line with all the required environmental demands.

Interesingtly the residents are not convinced, even though it is the third such ruling in favor of the project. In fact many blogs, and television channels, -that basically support SYRIZA- are trying to downplay the court ruling. In fact the ruling did not even make it to prime time news.
