In a Greece of austerity -and many hillbilly ideologies- crime has surged to levels never before recorded in our country. A couple of months ago we featured stories about electricity cables being stolen, and whole bridges being dismantled for their iron and/or steel, but we never had a story about both. Surprise, surprise, now we do! Thieves apparently stole almost 200,000 Euros’ worth of electricity cables from the bridge connecting the mainland with the island of Evia in Halkida, (northeast of Athens).
It was shocking to uncover that the thieves also took the cables from equipment used to measured earthquakes and the bridge’s oscillations.
The theft of the cable left the bridge in complete darkness on Wednesday night.
According to police reports, there has been an increase in incidents of metal theft over the last few years as gangs seek to profit from selling cables and other items as scrap metal. What the police should be doing, in our opinion of course, is also going after the scrap metal companies who sell this cable.
