The Greek people have been subjected to painful sacrifices through "tough but necessary measures," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said in a videotaped message to the 14th Annual Investor Forum-Greece, organised by Capital Link, in New York, under the title Building a New Greece, on November 29. The premier said it was necessary to create a business environment that would attract investment and development. Greece is not alone in this effort, he said, adding that "we can count on other European Union members and on allies and friends like the economic and business community of the US."
Development Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, who was a keynote speaker at the conference, stressed that new perspectives are opening up for Greece, and laid emphasis on the structural changes and the legal framework for investment, foreseeing a speedier process for granting operation licenses. Addressing a banquet with business people and officials, at the Harvard Club, on November 28, Hatzidakis spoke of the vision and as well as the time-frame to get Greece back on track and expounded on some of the measures being implemented.
These include a new investment law foreseeing a single licensing authority and self-assessment system of compliance by investors, the relaunch of infrastructure projects, a large-scale programme of privatizations, as well as the establishment of Hellenic Investment Fund.
During the banquet Greek-Australian Andreas Liveris, chairman and CEO of the Dow Chemical company, received the Capital Link Leadership Award for 2012, for his leading role as a founding member of the Hellenic Initiative, which he helped establish with the goal of supporting Greece and improving the country's image internationally.
