For reasons which are unclear -and very suspicious- PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos suddenly remembered the list on Tuesday morning and then handed it over to the State. He even had the audacity to say in a televised report on MEGA later on that day that he did us a favor by doing so!
Obviously Venizelos came under attack in the Greek parliament, especially from DHMAR -part of the coalition government- as well as the main opposition party SYRIZA. Panos Kammenos, the leader of the Independent Greek Party criticized Venizelos for taking the list "home", while one of his deputies said that the contents could have been tampered with.
Venizelos had been given the list in August 2011 but the PASOK leader never acted on it. Reports in TA NEA state that the use of the data on this CD allowed Spain to uncover about six billion Euros in unpaid taxes, Italy 570 million Euros, and approximately 4,000 French voluntarily settled their taxes pending investigation by the authorities in France. But in Greece the PASOK party decided to juggle the list around a bit until it totally disappeared.
In any civilized country, Venizelos, who knowingly withheld this information from the State, would be immediately arrested, but in Greece we cannot even do that because this PASOK leader made sure that all MPs have immunity. Hopefully it will stain his political future as further investigations into the "Lagarde List" continue.
When you really get right down to it, we are not really all that shocked. And this is because wherever there is graft, you find PASOK and if you do not find George Papandreou there then you will most definitely find Venizelos.
PASOK will never give any truthful answers as to why it purposely withheld this information from the State. The only PASOK and its leader achieved, for yet another time, is to once again tarnish Greece's image abroad and most importantly provoke public opinion.
Mark our word... The repercussions of Venizelos' actions will be felt immediately because foreign authorities will find it very difficult to ever entrust Greek politicians with sensitive data again.
And to be quite frank.. We do not blame them at all.
