Nation-Wide Strike Paralyzes Greece

The Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the public servants union (ADEDY) are planning to paralyze the country today with a nationwide strike against planned new State spending cuts of more than 11.5 billion euros. Hospitals are operation with skeleton staffs, and travel will be very difficult for several hours, or while the strikes are being held.

Taking part in the strike are doctors, university professors, teachers, hospital staff, ambulance workers, lawyers and civil servants. Moreover, banks will be closed since bank employees join the strike, as will petrol stations which will close until 3 p.m.

Transport will also be affected as airlines, ferries and some metro lines will undergo a work stoppage. Some airline companies such as EasyJet were obligated to re-schedule approximately 30 flights on account of a three-hour walkout by air traffic controllers.
