Justice minister Antonis Roupakiotis told reporters on MEGA channel this week that his ministry is considering introducing tracking bracelets for prisoners who are given leave. Addressing the problem of over-population in the country's prisons Roupakiotis said that apart from keeping track of the whereabouts of the inmates while on leave with the bracelets, the ministry was also looking into community service as an alternative form of sentencing so as to de-congest the jails. He then also said that the re-introduction of prison farms would also be considered. It needs to be reiterated that Greece's federal prisons are over congested due to a surge in crime (most of which involve illegal immigrants).
