The mayor of the northeastern port of Alexandroupoli, Evangelos Lambakis, on Wednesday lashed out at Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias following the latter's decision to transfer hundreds of undocumented immigrants to unused police academy facilities in Komotini, Xanthi and Didymoteicho. Reports quoted him as saying that Dendias wants to turn the capital's problem with immigration "into a problem for Thrace," Lambakis told SKAI TV that his prefecture was in a state of war and noted that local residents who vehemently object to the planned transfer of the illegal immigrants there were going to stage a protest rally in the city's central square on Wednesday evening. The mayor, who is creating chaos out of thin air, characterized Dendias' statements as "unreliable" and underlined that he did not trust anything the new government has said. "I don't believe that they only aim to detain the migrants temporarily at the police academy units, for 30 or 60 days," he said.
Editor's Note - Mr. Lambakis is making a big deal out of nothing. On Tuesday Dendias met with local authority officials and members of social and business groups from Thrace and promised that the detention of illegal immigrants there would only be temporary because the police academy is once again going to begin operating in September. Nonetheless, the Mayor of Alexadroupolis insisted on having his five minutes of fame on national TV because he refuses to believe in the government's plan.
