Golden Dawn has described the government's "Xenios Zeus" campaign, a "badly organised PR stunt", nonetheless the Greek police is continuing with the campaign in an attempt to battle illegal immigration. Last weekend at least 1130 arrests were documented in the Athenian capital, all those arrested failing to meet the legal requirements for their continued stay in the country. The "Xenios Zeus" campaign however, is set to spread beyond Athens, with authorities already planning for similar "sweeps" in the city of Patras.
Police are not only targeting random immigrant arrests, but will also be focusing on local markets, as they appear to be a hot spot for unregistered migrant activity. A "test run" for this type of search was carried out earlier today at a Patras local market, with authorities being assisted by both riot police and municipal police forces.
Meanwhile, the "Xenios Zeus" campaign has been hit from all sides, parties representing parliamentary opposition saving harsh criticism for the plan and its ultimate effects.
Over the weekend, both the KKE and SYRIZA took aim at the campaign, saying it was a gross insult to human rights, while the Golden Dawn party expressed its dissatisfaction with what they called a "badly organised PR stunt". In a statement Golden Dawn accused the government of "sending no immigrants back to their country and simply ferrying them to other parts of Greece, in an effort to deceive the public".
