Mayor of Penteli Issues 50mln Euro Lawsuit Against Turkey For Arson



The Mayor of Penteli (a northern Athens suburb) has apparently issued a 50 million euro lawsuit against Turkey on grounds of arson, for all the fires that nearly destroyed this area in 1995. The lawsuit against the Turkish Republic was filed by Penteli Mayor Mr. Dimitris Stergiou - Kapsalis on Thursday, July 5, 2012 in an Athens court.

The Mayor plans to use the money to fully restore 20,000 acres of forest land that were apparently set ablaze by Turkish MIT officials during the Ciller leadership, according to Mesut Yilmaz.

More precisely, in an interview with Turkish daily “Birgun”, and while referring to a state report on several huge fires in the 1990s in Greece, Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz had said in late December 2011 that Turkish secret service agents set fire to Greek forests during the leadership of his archrival Tansu Ciller, from 1995 to 1998. The former Turkish PM had also noted at the time that this could of been done on retaliation for the Greek stance of the Kurdish issue.

Indeed, during that period major forest fires caused huge damage on the islands of the eastern Aegean and in Macedonia. (Read more about this story by clicking here)
