New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said on Wednesday that the main priority of the conservative party is to form a stable government and keep Greece in the eurozone. Samaras noted that in order to do so, an administration must be set up immediately after the June 17 elections.
In a press conference that was televised on all the Greek channels, Samaras underlined that securing Greece's membership in the eurozone was the crucial priority, while he added that overhauling the Memorandum was also at the top of ND's agenda. "We will change the memorandum, the relentless recession cannot go on," noted Samaras.
The leader of ND said that the EU is open to renegotiating Greece's debt deal because "Europe is changing, Greece has a chance for a fair negotiation within this climate of change". He added that the two conditions set forth by his party to join other parties in a coalition government are that Greece's position in the eurozone is secured and that the memorandum can be modified.
Commenting on statements by Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras who is refusing to elaborate on the emergency plan he claims to have drafted for the event that negotiations break down with international creditors, the leader of ND said that if Tsipras does not want to talk about Plan B because he doesn't want the enemy to know, "but what about Greek citizens?".
Samaras even connected supporters of SYRIZA to domestic terrorism noting that "there were cells within SYRIZA who had applauded Koufodinas," referring to Dimitris Koufodinas, the convicted hit man and key member of the disbanded terrorist group November 17.
