Officials cracked down on an arms trafficking syndicate that was shipping firearms to Greece from the U.S. with the main destination being Crete. Following a special operation, police authorities arrested three people who were operating from Athens, Zakinthos and Rethymnon. At the same time, and across the Atlantic US officials arrested a 45-year old Greek-American who was linked to this crime and was apparently heading the syndicate. The Greek-American was purchasing the firearms and loading them onto several of his own automobiles and then shipping them off to Naples, Italy where they were then collected -in dispatches- via Zakynthos and then the largest portion would be sent to the island of Crete and obviously sold on the black market. The investigation began four months ago when US officials who were in Naples, Italy discovered a shipment containing 69 firearms of various types and other such ammunition. Officials also believe that this same crime syndicate imported 40 such firearms in January 2010 as well. Article in Greek on Epikaira
