From what it looks like Greek MPs joined forces on Friday against the Golden Dawn party in order to keep its candidate P. Zisimopoulos from vying for the seat of deputy parliamentary speaker. Golden Dawn won 18 of Parliament’s 300 seats in the June 17 elections, taking nearly 7 percent of the vote and as an opposition party in the seven-party Parliament it is entitled to field a candidate for the post of one of the seven deputy speakers, but unfortunately it did not manage to gather the 75 votes needed as dictated in the Greek Constitution.
Zisimopoulos did however receive 41 votes in the secret ballot, which means that the Golden Dawn party won the support of an extra 23 deputies from outside its ranks.
Following the vote, Golden Dawn said Friday's result was a "constitutional violation" and announced that it is going to take its complaint to a European Court. Golden Dawn general secretariat Nikos Michaloliakos said that They (meaning all the MPs) joined forces. They agreed on everything. I'd like to honor my 23 colleagues who voted for Golden Dawn. And I'd like to state that our exclusion ... shows who the system is afraid of".
Editor's Note - Clearly... Greek MPs, and the system altogether, loathes the Golden Dawn Party. And we here at hellasfrappe have spoken about this many times and have noted that their handling of this party (media included) is unfair, and very undemocratic. We also find it insulting -and a lie- to characterize them as neo-Nazis, since the Right was the force that battled against the Nazis in the 40s in comparison with the Left which sided with the German and fascist axis. We do not politically support this party, but we are not bothered by them either. Half a million people voted for them and this must be respected. Finally, we agree with what George Voulgarakis said in a tweet right after the voting. "The more the Greek Parliament isolates Golden Dawn, the stronger they will get," and if anyone in their right mind does not believe this... then simply get on the social networks and see what REAL people are saying. If Greece's house of democracy has an ounce of respect towards the citizens it represents... then they better shape up. Ganging up this way against a group of people who they clearly do not like, and who they characterize as thugs, instead makes them look like bigger tyrants and good old fashioned fascists.
