Filled Under: PASOK, SPECIAL REPORT
This morning we were shocked and dismayed by three articles in the foreign press claiming that the paramilitary troop EUROGENDFOR is ready to depart for Greece. In fact they claim that given that the French elections increased a discontent for the Euro (and the eurozone in general) all over the continent, the "charade" behind this whole crisis will end with their arrival in Greece!
The "European Gendarmerie Force" or EUROGENDFOR (EGF) is an initiative of 5 EU Member States - France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain – aimed at improving the crisis management capability in sensitive areas. Since Wednesday, 17th December 2008, the High Level Interdepartmental Committee Meeting (CIMIN) decided to welcome the Romanian Gendarmerie to become a full member of the EGF. Therefore the EGF consists from that moment of 6 member states. EGF responds to the need to rapidly conduct all the spectrum of civil security actions, either on its own or in parallel with the military intervention, by providing a multinational and effective tool.
The author in the article claims that European governments who want to avoid using their own armies against their citizens have the choice to call in the paramilitary troops "European Gendarmerie Force". In theory, the author adds, one can appeal to the EGF when the EU sees a crisis. In Article 4 of the Constitutive Treaty on the tasks and commitments we read: "You can use the EGF to protect people and property and maintain order in case of disturbances. "
And the obvious question is what disturbances? What are they expecting?
Who is going to determine (or who determined) that we need a paramilitary troop in Greece so that it can use excessive force on the Greek people?
And surely the next obvious question is WHEN? Is this going to happen on Sunday night right after the elections wrap up?
Will they be summoned to Greece by the EU, or has the outgoing government of Lucas Papademos already called for their arrival and why?
We hope the authors of these three articles are wrong, because as a nation of people we would hate to have to see their presence on our streets after enjoying a day of democracy following 2 and a half years of total Junta by the PASOK regime.
Also, this is the second time in less than 7 months that we hear about this paramilitary troop allegedly coming to Greece. Just what are the authors of these articles trying to achieve by announcing this? Are they warning us? Or are they trying to scare us? No one knows... only policy makers know that, but the only word that can describe what we felt when reading these three articles is "tyranny".
