The buzz of the day is the assassination attempt against former premier and leader of the main opposition New Democracy party Costas Karamanlis. Stories were featured on RT, Reuters, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Associated Press, RIA Novosti, Windsor Star, Diena and many more. We are disappointed that it took so long for these media giants to even surface this story, since hellasfrappe had revealed it from June, 2011 the very day the Epikaira magazine published the controversial issue. The Greek prosecution launched the probe in August 2011 and on Wednesday prosecutor Nikos Ornerakis officially pressed charges based on evidence he had from classified documents, media reports and the testimony of Greek secret service agents, police the prime minister’s security guards, etc. As most know, while Karamanlis was in power he tried to promote energy ties with Russia and had made substantial progress in negotiating the South Stream pipeline, which was to bring natural gas from Central Asia and Russia via the Black Sea to Europe. The pipeline, however, challenged the EU and US-backed Nabucco project, and we suspect that this was not received well by our western allies, as well as constitutes as a strong motive for wanting Karamanlis "out of the way". Asked about the criminal scenario, and the plot codenamed "Pytia 1" on Wednesday night on EXTRA 3 LAOS parliamentarian and former head of the Greek secret services Gianni Korantis gave an interesting account on what happened. Also commenting on the issue was George Trangas on Thursday's morning talk show with George Papadakis. For details on this story and other related stories on this controversial case, click here.
