Hellenes of the world I call on you to assemble.
It is time to start becoming active!
Over the past two years the people of Greece have been threatened, blackmailed, and psychologically abused by the media, the world markets, "think tank" organizations, bankers, politicians in Greece and especially by its so called allies. Every day our nation and its people are mocked and discredited and everyday it has been a struggle to convince the people of the world that "we did not have it coming!"
In a country of 11 million people a minimum of 4,000 people lose their jobs EVERY DAY, the homeless have sky-rocketed and soup kitchens are being set up in every corner. Mothers are sending their children off to school without feeding them properly, the suicide rate has risen sharply, crime has increased to ridiculous levels and many people have fallen into deep depression.
Only a fool cannot see that there is a plan to strangle nations financially so that the rich become richer and the poor poorer. To start with, the banks set the plan in motion in every country and begin an extreme accumulation of debt assisted by corrupt governments. Then the I.M.F comes in. Who are these select few? Well, they are the people who collaborate with those profiting from the crisis, with those who bail-out the banks and even with those who are ready to sell out the national wealth of each country to money hungry vultures (otherwise known as multinational corporations). Some are also corrupt politicians who only look at fattening of their Swiss accounts, and totally disregard the needs of their people while others are big fish who force the weaker ones to purchase costly defense systems.
All these groups have undermined the interests of the countries in the south of Europe, especially Greece, and all these people (groups) should be accused of high treason for doing so.
But we continue to hear the same thing... The Greek people deserved it.
Being a Greek- Canadian I also heard a fellow Greek-Canadian from Ottawa stating on a national television channel that he was "ashamed" of being Greek. I cannot explain how this made me feel. At first I was enraged, and then I felt shame that we have members such as him in our community.
Then I heard that the Archbishop of North America is organizing a fund to help with the soup kitchens and the homeless problem here in Greece. This is indeed a generous move, but if I was the Archbishop of America and someone who had a personal friendship with the US President, then I would simply call him up and ask him why are they doing this to Greece! I would organize a demonstration... I would do something!!!
And our Omogeneia leaders... ahhh yes.... a chapter of its own...
They have been absent from everything that is going on in Greece. Maintaining and practising Hellenism to them is organizing Greek festivals, eating souvlaki and attending a bouzouki night. This kind of explains why many of their offspring are totally apathetic to what is going on here and would rather discuss Anna Vissi's new hit or what color Despina Vandi's underwear was when they saw her live at her recent performance.
Is this what we want?
Are these the ideals that were channeled to us from our parents?
Is this why our parents left Greece with a suitcase in one hand and us in the other so that we can be indifferent?
Especially with everything that is happening right now in this country?
No friends...
We cannot afford to be indifferent.
We have an obligation to become active and make our voices heard!
We owe it to our parents, our children, our heritage and the continuance of Hellenism.
The people of Greece need your solidarity and are thirsting for your support. Doesn't it sadden your heart to watch foreigners advocate for Greece while you are comfortably sitting in your living rooms?
You know that Greek people are too proud to be beggars and the people in Greece do not want you to send them food and clothing. It is this very pride that sets us apart from other nations.
The people of Greece need moral support... always have, and always will. That is why they have been so touched by the support from all these countries.
Besides, Greeks have been oppressed for so long that they can go without food and they are strong enough to struggle because simply put they have been doing this for thousands of years. All they want is support, and they especially want it from the Hellenes in the Diaspora.
If your Omogeneia leaders are not doing enough to show their support to Greece in this difficult time for the nation then its up to you (the individual) to press them to do so.
Sending your fellow countrymen a warm blanket and a can of corn is generous but imagine what kind of an impact protesting and rallying is. If you can't do that, then at least tolerate discussing the problem. Ignoring it or saying you are ashamed is not going to make it go away. And for God sake's stop feeling ashamed, and being quick to blame the people of this country because of what some "paid parrot" told you on the television! You will not lose your status if you search for the truth and keep an open mind.
Start becoming active before you become part of the problem!
Since 25/05/11 the people of Greece have been swarming to the public squares indignant, enraged and determined. They united against a corrupt system and are resisting all these measures which only aim to kill democracy. What you see on television is only a violent approach to the problem. Stick to the essence. Why would thousands of people revolt? Why would you?
They are revolting because they have realized that they are obligated to take their fate into their hands. They are fighting to defend democracy. This was re-born in the squares, in the people's assemblies and even here on the social networks.
The struggle of Greece, and of all the peoples in the south of Europe is a struggle to maintain humanitarianism, dignity and basic civil rights.
Greece might have been used to test out this new type of world order but I guarantee you friends, that with your solidarity it will end here.
