UEFA kicks Volos out of Europa League

UEFA kicked Volos out of the Europa League on Thursday because of the Greek club's involvement in a match-fixing scandal. Volos was scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in a playoff tie on Aug. 18 and 25. UEFA said its disciplinary committee banned Volos from European competitions for an additional three years "deferred for a probationary period of five seasons.''

Volos can appeal the decision by Monday - three days before it was due to host PSG in the first leg. UEFA did not say which team would replace Volos, which beat Luxembourg's Differdange 6-0 on aggregate in the third qualifying round.

Europa League rules require that clubs have not helped fix a match in the past five seasons. Volos qualified by finishing fifth in the Greek league last season, then was demoted to the second tier by league organizers last month.

Volos overturned that ruling at a Greek Football Association appeal hearing Wednesday. However, it will start the new season with a 10-point penalty.
