Renowned Greek singer George Dalaras will appear on stage once more on Aug. 19 following last year’s concert, despite the countless hurdles he had to face in previous years due to his views on Cyprus. Dalaras, however, is only one of a number of such foreign artists and intellectuals who were denied an audition in Turkey due to their alleged political views.
Dalaras had caused a public stir after a right-wing journal labeled him as a “Turco-phobic Greek” on its front cover in 2007 when the Fener Greek Patriarchate had invited him to Istanbul to give a concert. The Istanbul Governor’s Office then cancelled Dalaras’s concert on security grounds. Dalaras had been unable to perform in Turkey for many years up until last year.
Dalaras’s roots lie in Turkey’s Aegean province of İzmir and he has released some 60 albums to date. He is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. Refugee Agency
