Base jumping participants offered spectators a unique visual experience at the popular "Navaghio" (shipwreck) beach on the island of Zakynthos this past week, a report from the state news agency said.
"Base", the acronym formed from the first letters of the words building, antenna, span and earth, has gained in popularity over the past few years, as daredevils attempt to perform a freefall from steep cliffs or other objects, usually from a height of no less than 200 metres.
Afterwards, they continue the fall with a parchute. Lack of or light winds remains a prerequisite for a base jump fall. Twenty participants from Finland, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, the USA and Italy are taking part in the three-day event.
