Russian graduates take Hippocratic Oath in Kos

Eighty Rostov State Medical University graduates made their wish a reality this week by taking the Hippocratic Oath on the Dodecanse island of Kos, the home of the “father of medicine”, Hippocrates.“The Hippocratic Oath is a scared text for Russians; it expresses, in an extraordinary way, the ethos of classical medicine and ancient Greek thought,” Rostov State Medical University Rector Aleksei Savisko told the state news agency.

Dressed in an ancient Greek robe and with a crown of laurel leaves on his head, he recited the Hippocratic Oath in Russian, to be repeated by the soon-to-be doctors, who gathered at the archaeological site of the healing temple of Asklepeion. The arrival of the Russian students was made possible at the initiative of Russian lawmaker Ivan Savvidi, himself of ethnic Greek origin, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the university foundation, celebrated in 2010.

Greek Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Giorgos Nikitiadis, who hails from Kos, stressed that the oath-taking event could take place annually for medical students worldwide, who wish to have this extraordinary experience.
