Northern Greece celebrates International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT”

Despite the bad weather conditions (strong wind), which made the volunteers and organizers’ work more difficult, the sixth annual International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” was held with absolute success and the performance of the runners were very good. The participation of the runners and the spectators at the finish point, at the statue of Alexander the Great, at Thessaloniki’s’ beach pavement overcame those of the previous years.

All relevant groups were present for once more and supported actively the organization.

The race was first established in 2006 and has since then become an annual tradition. The marathon, an event characterizing the spirit of freedom of the ancient Greek Culture like no other event, is here to bring the message all over the world.

The Marathon "Alexander the Great" relates the past with the future. Through its 42Km the History of Macedonia can be viewed. Pella, as most of us know (but foreigners do not) is the birthplace of Alexander the Great and the capital of Ancient Macedonia. It is also the starting area of the race, and Salonika, the latest capital of Macedonia, hosts its finish. The marathon race "Alexander the Great" hopes to be in the future a significant international event representing the Hellenic spirit of sports and culture.
