Are there any Islamic State militants in Greece? According to the Greek Minister of Public Order Vassilis Kikilias information on Jihad terrorists being in Greece have not (so far) been confirmed. The same notion was also expressed by the leader of PASOK and Minister of Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos last week when he said that there are no problems with jihadists in Greece, but that there is a problem in the wider region. However, this does not agree with the statements that were made by the US State Department on Wednesday which advised Greek officials to arrest ISIS militants in our country!
According to press reports (on defencenet and ProtoThema), the United States on Wednesday confirmed reports that it asked Greek officials to arrest Islamic State militants traveling to Greece from Bosnia and Albania.
US State Department’s Spokesperson Jen Psaki noted that travel of foreign militants isn’t just a matter of concern to Greece.
She stressed that US intelligence services are aware of 15,000 foreign jihadist militants of which 2,000 are believed to be of western descent.
Greece’s National Intelligence Service has already been at a heightened state of vigilance for suspected militants and is keeping close tabs on radical groups within the country. Experts are in the opinion that Greece’s position could become a conduit for radicals travelling from the realm of Islam to the West.
