The Party of 5% Goes Bankrupt - Telephone Company Cuts Off Lines At PASOK

English: The logo of the Greek political party
The PASOK party which only has 5% (or much less) of the national vote, and which is presently part of the coalition government, may push crippling laws on citizens that can even include the seizure of assets, but they are definitely bad at tending to their own affairs and cannot even pay their own debts. Aside from the hundreds of millions of euros which have gone unaccounted for (meaning hundreds of millions of tax payer euros), PASOK doesn't pay its utility bills. The situation got so out of hand that on Monday Greece's biggest telecoms company OTE cut off PASOK's telephone lines at the party headquarters on Harilaou Trikoupi.

At first, the employees at PASOK's headquarters thought it was a technical problem, but they soon realized that it wasn't and were dumbfounded when they received the news that the party had a massive amount in unpaid bills.

Fortunately one line, which was recently transferred from Hippocrates (former PASOK headquarters) was left unharmed but then again it may be cut off soon as well if they once again forget to pay the bill.

These are the people that naive Greek citizens entrusted the nation to, and as you can see they cannot even pay a simple bill, yet they want to impose harsh austerity measures on us.

Greek citizens are losing their homes because of debts to utility companies. Just the other day a homeowner in the prefecture of Ilia lost his home to the Wind telecom company because of a debt of 2,200 euros.

What will PASOK lose?

Source in Greek - defencenet

(Editor - If PASOK does not have the money to pay a simple telephone bill, then why the hell do they preach to us about tiding up our house? Also... How can PASOK supporters accept watching their party leader ride around town in one of the most luxurious cars in Greece - and said to be priced in the hundreds of thousands - when they cannot even pay their own operation costs?)

Mantelis Appears In Court Over Siemens Kickback Scandal But Trial Suspended Until Nov. 25th

An Athens appeals court would begin listening to the appeal by Former Transport Minister Tassos Mantelis under the Costas Simitis government against his sentence for failing to declare 200,000 euros that he apparently received from German electronics and engineering giant Siemens, but the trial was apparently rescheduled for later on this month. Mantelis has already admitted that he received this money from Siemens but he baptized it as an election campaign contribution rather than confess that it was a bribe and/or kickback. Unfortunately the trial was interrupted and rescheduled for November 25.

The charges against him claim that he received kickbacks from Siemens (between 1998 and 2000) from a contract awarded to the German electronics company to digitise the Greek state telecom's systems.

On trial with Mantelis are businessman Georgios Tsougranis, tax office employee Antonia Markou, former Siemens executive Ilias Georgiou and his associate Aristidis Mantas.

So far, Mantelis is the only politician that has been convicted in connection to kickbacks made by Siemens to Greek decision-makers and public officials to secure state contracts.

The Siemens bribery scandal was a corruption and bribery scandal that hit Greece over deals between Siemens AG and Greek government officials during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens regarding security systems and purchases by OTE in the 1990s (or during PASOK rule). Charges have, as of 27 August 2008, not been brought against any specific individual, as under Greek law charges can be filled against "any responsible person". So far, no wrongdoing has been proved, either by Siemens, by Greek government officials, or anyone else.

It has been claimed that the political outcome of the case may be analogous to that of Italy 15 years ago and most importantly that the bribes may have been up to 100 million Euros.

Some believe that when Costas Karamanlis rose to power, he did not send this case to justice, but they were wrong. The case was immediately sent to justice, and following several years of investigations a Greek prosecutor filled charges on July 1st,  2008 for money laundering and bribery.

Tasos Mantelis who was Minister for Transport and Communications during the PASOK administration in 1998 admitted in May 2010 to a parliamentary investigation committee that the sum of 200,000 German marks was deposited in 1998 in a Swiss bank account from Siemens during his administration, allegedly for funding his election campaign. A further deposit of 250,000 German marks was made into the same bank account in 2000 which Mantelis claims is from an unknown source.

Gov't Holds New Round Of Talks With Troika

Greek Opposition Leader Antonis Samaras
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Wednesday had a meeting with Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, leader of the PASOK party that supports the coalition government, to discuss the new round of talks between the Greek government and the EU-ECB-IMF troika officials representing the country's creditors.

Sources reporting on the meeting said that Samaras and Venizelos agreed that the negotiations must be concluded as quickly as possible so as to restore social harmony and calm. The prime minister and Venizelos also repeated that no new horizontal measures will be taken.

PASOK officials said the party wanted greater social justice in the single property tax and that Venizelos' position with respect to Greek defence industries was that they should retain their export activities and their liquidation conducted while they were in operation. (ANA-MPA)

SHOCK - Secret Poll Puts Golden Dawn in First Place

By John Ward (The Slog) - A regular source late on Monday night informed the Slog with updated opinion/voting behaviour research carried out secretly by senior political players in Greece. Astonishingly, the study has the Far Right Golden Dawn Party in first place, followed closely by the Leftist Party SYRIZA.

As predicted by the Slog last month, the attempt by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to frame the far-right Golden Dawn party in the case of the murder of a young Leftist has backfired. The last poll from this source had GD in 2nd place. The Party has now taken over the top spot.

Between 25-29th of October, 1,423 Greeks were polled about their voting intentions. Golden Dawn scored 22%, followed very closely by SYRIZA. New Democracy (the governing Party in Coalition with PASOK) came a very poor third. Men and older respondents are significantly more likely to vote Golden Dawn than women and the young.

Two Golden Dawn members were murdered last week, after the Poll took place. It is likely that this will have strengthened rather than weakened sympathy among traditional Greeks for the Far Right Party.

The author of the Slog has been traveling into, out of, and around Greece since last March. While the author says he is surprised by the size of the Golden Dawn revival, he is not remotely surprised by the confrontation now boiling up between the Hard Left and the Hard Right. Middle class and skilled working class Greeks talk openly about the possibility of Civil War and/or a military putsch. Senior professional and other well-off Greeks still seem to be living in a bubble – as are the bureaucratic and political classes.

According to him, the country is heading towards a classic reversion to the extreme, caused by an economic crisis massively exacerbated by Brussels-am-Berlin austerity obsession. The support for Golden Dawn has jumped further since EC commissioner Olli Rehn admitted late last month that debt relief for Greece was to be delayed. The west European and US mainstream media may have lost interest in Greece, but they need to reverse that apathy with all speed.

NEW SCANDAL - Did Papantoniou Fly Off To Brazil To Avoid Justice Days Before Being Summoned?

credit newsbomb
While the world concentrates on the bloody cold blooded murders of two Golden Dawn members, the establishment once again worked its magic to save one of its own. This time it was former PASOK defence minister and minister of economy (under the Costas Simitis government) Yannos Papantoniou, who was apparently being investigated by authorities for money-laundering and tax evasion (also implicated in the Lagarde list). The former PASOK MP apparently boarded a flight and fled the country last Thursday under extreme secrecy in what some reports claim was for health reasons (of course we all know better).

More exactly, a report on olympia and newsbomb said that Papantoniou boarded a flight with Lufthansa and then flew to Munich (or London), and then on to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil just hours before he was set to be summoned by judicial authorities to answer to the US $3.2 million in unaccounted funds that were found in his and his wife's pothen esches report (or the where did you get these funds report), as well as for the handling (and transactions) of well over US $40 million in accounts that the couple held at the HSBC Bank in Geneva.

The former PASOK minister, who is just another GREEN SOCIALIST implicated in yet another crime against the state, apparently flew to Rio de Janeiro on a private jet that is owned by a powerful Greek businessman (and friend).

When the news broke on Monday night, sources close to Papantoniou (obviously of the Simitis and PASOK sort) attempted to downplay this claiming that he made this journey for health reasons. According to them Papantoniou has a severe liver disease and (out of the blue) he decided to fly to Brazil to attend to his health (or basically escape the grips of justice to a country where the law would not be able to easily find him just days before being summoned by Greek authorities to answer to the black funds that were found in his accounts).

Anyone with half a brain would then wonder, how is it possible that someone with such a severe liver disease can fly so many hours and only trust the services of a friend in the Brazilian medical field? Doesn't it sound too surreal? (Of course it does.) Nonetheless we will give them the benefit of the doubt, but we ask, why not rush him off to a Greek hospital, or a specialist in Europe, or even the US?

Why Brazil?

There are too many voices that are convinced that his sudden -and mysterious- departure to Brazil is only because of what competent authorities discovered in his bank accounts last week. Besides the timing is just too incredible. More exactly, last week officials from the Financial Crime squad (SDOE) discovered that the deposits made in Papantoniou's account HSBC in Geneva were not made by remittances from Greek banks, but that these funds were transferred by foreign banks! On top of that, SDOE officials also discovered another account in the bank of Singapore.

His escape days before being summoned only gives "conspiracy" theorists more reason to believe that he did so because he did not want to face questioning. Reports claim that his powerful friends in the corporate world and especially in Brussels banned together once again to help one of their own (just like they have for most of PASOK. Example George Papandreou).

We are convinced that this could be another repeat of the "Christoforakos Escape". In May 2009, Michalis Christoforakos who was the former head of Siemens in Greece, was scheduled to appear before an investigating magistrate that was investigating the Siemens scandal. Just before his escape, Christoforakos had refused to appear at several previous summons and when he was summoned for the last time and refused to once again make an appearance authorities went to look for him and discovered that he had fled Greece and flown off to Germany. The Greek government immediately issued an international arrest warrant but because he also held a German passport he could not be extradited back to Greece to face charges (or arranging vast Siemens bribes to go to Greek parliamentary MPs).

It should be noted that Christoforakis was able to do this because Dora Bakoyianni -an enemy of Costas Karamanlis and a friend to Germany and the Bush Family- was heading the Foreign Ministry. So would it then be safe to assume that because Evangelos the Large is a friend to Germany and heading the foreign ministry that Papantoniou was also able to make a similar escape? Will he suddenly present a passport to Brazil, or Germany too?

No one knows, we will just have to wait and see.

Stay tuned frappers.

RealNews Report Says Greek-Americans & NSA Behind Spy Network Against Costas Karamanlis

English: Athens, Greece. Secretary Rice meets ...
Using a dummy investment consulting firm as a front cover, Greek-American agents, who were operating on behalf of U.S. intelligence services, apparently established a very shady spy network in Greece that had as its target the government of former premier Costas Karamanlis. This was revealed at the weekend by the RealNews newspaper in a special report. According this report, the VAT (Value Added Tax ) number of this company shows that it had purchased four mobile phones, three of which were used in the first wire-tapping, or during the period 2004-2005. The author claims that when authorities from the then Ministries of Public Order, Justice, etc., discovered that their phones were being tapped into, the mobile phones were suddenly and suspiciously deactivated. The report then says that about two months later, a fourth mobile, which until then was totally inactive, suddenly activated and the eavesdropping apparently continued against Costas Karamanlis (and other members of his government).

In fact, the report notes, the eavesdropping continued well into 2007 but because of this, the network was easily identified by Greek intelligence authorities. The same report in RealNews then reveals that EYP began monitoring the spies and discovered that the specific network, or the Greek Americans, were in constant communication with the head of the American secret service in Maryland, and would regularly ask their superiors what type of action to take next.

The author then states that all this evidence, and more, is now in the hands of Supreme Court magistrate Dimitris Foucas who is investigating the case, from an unknown witness who apparently played a pivotal role (or anti-monitoring) in the wire-tapping case against Costas Karamanlis. This same witness more or less photographed one American, who he claims held a key post in this eavesdropping network. The newspaper notes that the witness told Foucas that this mystery man (spy) commonly travelled to and from our country between the periods 1997-2010, or during periods when profound issues such as the South Stream pipeline project, which was a top priority issue for the Americans, were being negotiated by the then government. Apparently the witness told Foucas that the Americans were not very happy about a possible Greek-Russian energy pact and that is the main reason they wanted first hand knowledge about the course of negotiations.

The witness also claims that the mystery man had diplomatic status, but it was later discovered (by judicial authorities) that he was nothing more than a spy. And what is worse, the newspaper also says that this mystery man is also linked with the assassination plot against Costas Karamanlis.

The author of the article then claims that the only thing left for authorities to do right now is confirm his identity (photographs, documents) and an arrest warrant will be issued.

(It should be reminded that Foukas was the one had requested that these three cases be merged into one -wire-tapping, December 2008 riots, and assassination plot against Karamanlis - or Pythia1 plan-).

Will Justice Call On Papandreou To Testify In Karamanlis Case Now That Karchimakis Got Caught?

English: George Papandreou, Greek politician
English: George Papandreou, Greek politician (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Yet another leading member of PASOK, Michalis Karchimakis (former PASOK MP, ex-Gen. Secretariart of PASOK, and very close friend of George Papandreou) is due to appear before Mr. Dimitris Fucas (who is 4th supreme court prosecutor investigating the wire-tapping and assassination attempt against former premier Costas Karamanlis), on charges of breaching State secrets (a charge that is a felony).

(As noted in a previous article on this case - Mr. Foucas called Michalis Karchimakis to give evidence in a judicial investigation into the wiretapping issue, which was first uncovered in 2005, after a top-secret document was found at his home. Please note that the PASOK MP is not implicated in the wire-tapping scandal directly, but rather on the sidelines of this huge state investigation. Read more about this in a previous report by clicking here)

There is clear evidence that during the period 2005 - 2007, when Costas Karamanlis was in power, a hush-hush network of people -or a state within a state- was operating on on behalf of the then leader of the opposition PASOK party Mr. George Papandreou. Specifically, Karchimakis, who was one of Papandreou's  closest associate, apparently illegally possessed highly classified state documents, that in most cases was information that was generally used to brief the head of the government, or Mr. Costas Karamanlis.

Let us repeat: The PASOK party had access -via Karchimakis- to top-secret information which was only suposed to be viewed by the Greek prime minister.

About six months ago, in an open Athens court, a series of public officials appeared before the prosecuting team investigating the case and gave information about this breaching of state secrets. Mr. Foucas took their depositions, and added them to the evidence which the prosecution has been gathering over the last two years and began probing the case more closely.

(It should be reminded that the 2008 December riots, the Wire-Tapping Scandal against the former PM, and the Pythia Plan -which aimed at assassinating the former prime minister as well as destabilising Greece socially, economically and politically- were all merged into one massive investigation by a Prosecutor of the Hellenic Supreme Court, and the investigation has been ongoing for two years now).

With this fresh evidence at hand, a search warrant was issued to investigate the home and the political office of Mr. Karchimakis, where a confidential document was found. One report on defencenet on Sunday said that officials also found defence documents (but the report did not clarify whether these documents were top-secret or not).

The same report on defencenet added that the decision for the surprise raid -which eventually yeilded the expected results- came after a series of depositions that were given from Greek intelligence officers (EYP) claiming that Karchimakis was behind this leaking of state documents (or the source that linked these documents to the then leader of the Greek opposition party which was George Papandreou!)

Foukas also filed charges against an employee from the Greek intelligence service (EYP), who apparently also testified but was then released on restrictive terms. She is now facing serious charges that resemble that of espionage.

According to her: In late November, early December 2005, Karchimakis asked to  meet with various union heads at the Greek intelligence agency. The meeting was held at a cafe in Kolonaki (central Athens). At that meeting, Karchimakis turned to the intelligence oficer (initials) A.P. and said "what is happening? You have not yet brought me any of these beautiful documents."

Karchimakis' property was searched after the EYP agent claimed he had asked for the document in 2006.

In a nutshell:  Karchimakis was accused by an officer from Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) of asking for top-secret documents to be given to him in 2006. This is what prompted magistrate Dimitris Foukas to oversee the search at Karchimakis’s house and office.

Karchimakis has dismissed accusations but nonetheless faces charges of breaching the state secrets law and has to appear before the magistrate on November 8.

He claims that he is a victim of a conspiracy that is aimed at discrediting and framing his duties as an MP. The former close friend of George Papandreou also says that highly classified documents (as described above) were never found at his home, and the only evidence gathered by officials concerned some documents from the Ministry of Defence which he purposely kept at his home "for the needs of parliamentary scrutiny, as a shadow defense minister during the period when PASOK was in the opposition."

This of course differs greatly from the indictment which was drawn up against him, and which states that in 2005, and with the help of a intelligence officer, Karchimakis held information in his hands that concerned the country's security and foreign relations,  something that we all know is generally dubbed as being highly-classified by all governments.

And if that wasn't enough, prosecutors are keeping close tabs on another suspect, who is a foreigner, and who apparently lived in Greece (or was in and out of the country) during the period 1997-2010 and who is directly or indirectly also involved in this controversial case. According to one witness, this suspect played a key role in organizing the network needed to set up the wire-tapping of Mr. Karamanlis. He apparently lived in Greece and used many aliases. Presently, this mystery man is being sought by authorities, but there are no solid leads since they do not even know his idenity.

Karchimakis was recognized as George Papandreou's "right hand" in the area of "special information" (whatever that may mean). His involvement in this case, which caught him in possession of classified information, in a case which began right after Epikaira magazine published an article that exposed the assassination attempt against Karamanlis, appears to indirectly involve George Papandreou. Speaking about good old George, if all the information in the Greek press is true, then wouldn't it be safe to assume that following Karchimakis, the prosecution will also summon George Papandreou for questioning?

After all this is about leaking state information, or basically spying, and who knows this kind of activity might have also been practised by other members of PASOK, who with the help of government officials, were assigned to key positions in the field of information systems, and worked with a "parallel" manner with potential to harm the Greek State's interests.

The question is, will our judicial system actually dig that deep? It remains to be seen.

PASOK MP Implicated In Karamanlis Wire-Tapping Case - Breached State Secrets

The buzz in the press on Friday, and certainly one of the most controversial stories, concerns the investigation into the assassination attempt and illegal wire-tapping scandal against former prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, which on Friday took on a unpredictable (or predictable) turn. According to press reports, judicial officials are now closing in on several individuals which they feel played a catalytic role in both cases. Unfortunately the story was swept under the rug on Friday night because of the terrorist attack against the Golden Dawn party -which resulted in the death of two of its members-, and the Greek press did not even open the subject on the nightly news. Not to worry though, HellasFrappe is always on top of things. Besides would we miss an opportunity to lash out at our least favorite party? NEVER!!!

According to the reports, magistrate Mr. D. Foucas who is investigating this huge case, summoned Michalis Karchimakis to give evidence in a judicial investigation that is focused on the wiretapping scandal, which was first uncovered in 2005, after a top-secret document was found at his home.(Note the PASOK MP is not implicated in the wire-tapping scandal directly, but rather on the sidelines of this huge state investigation.)

Who is Mr. Karchimakis? Well... here is where it gets interesting. Michalis Karchimakis  is a leading PASOK MP who was also the party's General Secretariat several years ago after being hand selected by (none other... than) George Papandreou. The charges against him are very serious, and include the breach of confidential state secrets.

Foukas also filed charges against an employee from the Greek intelligence service (EYP), who apparently apologized for her acts and according to reports she was then released on restrictive terms. So why is Karhimakis being slapped with breaching confidential State secrets, and why is a former intelligence officer facing similar charges? Well, according to the same reports, Michalis Karchimakis was accused by an officer from Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) of asking for top-secret documents to be given to him in 2006. This is what prompted magistrate Dimitris Foukas to oversee a search of Karchimakis’s house, where a secret document was discovered. The ex-minister now faces charges of breaching the state secrets law and is requested to appear before the magistrate on November 8.

It should be reiterated that Foukas is investigating the circumstances surrounding the wiretapping scandal that helped unidentified eavesdroppers listen in on the mobile phone conversations of then Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and more than 100 others before, during and after the 2004 Athens Olympics. Ericsson, which supplied the telephone exchange that was hacked into, and Vodafone, which was the service provider, were both fined by the Hellenic Authority of Communications Security and Privacy (ADAE) in 2007 for failing to protect the privacy of those who had their phones hacked, which included the head of EYP, several ministers and members of the armed forces.

The wiretaps were discovered by Ericsson on March 7, 2005 and Vodafone immediately asked for the software to be deactivated. Investigating authorities said that this decision prevented them from discovering who was recording the conversations, although EYP stated that the source of the eavesdropping was somewhere in central Athens.

Reports also noted that Foukas’s investigation has at the same time uncovered the alleged involvement of a foreign national in the wiretaps and that judicial authorities are now trying to track down the suspect.

We want to once again remind readers that all three cases (2008 December riots, Wire-Tapping Scandal, and Pythia Plan - which was the backbone to the assassination attempt and destabilization plan against Karamanlis and Greece) were all merged into one massive investigation by a Prosecutor of the Hellenic Supreme Court. The integration and correlation of files, on the one hand, documents the motives and deceit committed in all three cases, and on the other, intends to present dramatic evidence as to the "why" or the background of all three cases.

More specifically the move to bind all three cases has as its aim to:
  • Reveal the names of foreign intelligence agents involved in these cases.
  • Reveal a document that proves that George Papandreou was well aware about the "postponement or total dismissal" of various policies that dealt with several Greek pipeline agreements (especially those signed between Greece and Russia).
  • Reveal information about mysterious Cypriot deposits that in return reveal other startling evidence.
  • Reveal evidence proving that Costas Karamanlis was instructed in February 2009 to avoid any movement in Athens (in other words was warned to take security measures), and this resulted in confining him only at the Maximos Mansion and his home in Rafina (giving the opposition and the media a reason to say that he wasn't active and was worn out).
  • Reveal that specific "journalists" were collaborating with foreign centers (against the government at the time as well as Greece). Wikileaks has already published a cable outlining that foreign powers involved in this case. (Incidentally in one of those cables which are featured here on HellasFrappe under Features and then under Leaks, Karamanlis was baptized as "Buddha", from several (idiotic) reporters who apparently used this characterization against him to create strange connotations that were involved with this case).
  • Reveal evidence that foreign embassies operating in Athens were convinced that Karamanlis would fall in 2008 -or after the 'accidental' fires in the Peloponnese-. (Tip: If you can put two and two together, then try and remember which politicians said they wanted the tanks on the streets in December, and you will hit the jackpot!)
  • Reveal evidence about a bomb that was discovered at a shipowners dinner gala but which was luckily removed before being detonated!
  • Reveal shocking testimony from the former head of the Greek Intelligence Agency Mr.Korantis (who later became an MP with the LAOS party).
  • And many other aspects of the case will be presented as well.
  • Check the article we featured on this by clicking here
The role of the former adviser to George Papandreou, or the mysterious Alex Rondos is also being investigated. HellasFrappe had featured an article by the Epikaira magazine about this mystery man in the past, and featured a couple of stories on him that certainly open a series of discussions. For one, he is 100 percent in favor of opening up the Aegean to Turkey, and two, this man always somehow appears in countries that are either rich in oil (and natural gas) or that will house energy pipelines.

Alex Rondos, who was a leading adviser at the Greek Foreign Ministry or while George Papandreou was there, (and while he was prime minister) is indeed an enigma. Rondos is apparently is a man of many missions in former Soviet republics that have "energy", with involvement in many NGOs in these countries, and a crucial role in the politics of Georgia which went into suicidal war against Russia in 2008, etc. etc. etc. Basically he is a man who has somehow mysteriously appeared in all the "hot spots" all over the world.

Let us not forget that Korantis had apparently informed the prosecution that Rondos was the man who knew about the conspiracy to assassinate Costas Karamanlis -leaving it to be understood that so did Papandreou-, but of course the former head of EYP never revealed anything else about him but rather said that the information that was given to Greek intelligence by Russian officers -about this whole case and the people involved- proved completely reliable.

Please read the stories below for more details, as well as to reference the wiretapping case, the assassination plot, and find out who Mr. Rondos is. (All information is sourced, and references are made)
