Lights, Camera, Action: Hollywood’s Relationship with US "Deep" Politics & the Pentagon

By Matthew Alford and Robbie Graham (Global Research) - Here we build a prima facae case supporting the idea that Hollywood continues to be a target for infiltration and subversion by a variety of state agencies, in particular the CIA. Academic debates on cinematic propaganda are almost entirely retrospective, and whilst a number of commentators have drawn attention to Hollywood’s longstanding and open relationship with the Pentagon, little of substance has been written about the more clandestine influences working through Hollywood in the post-9/11 world. As such, our work delves into the field of what Peter Dale Scott calls “deep politics”; namely, activities which cannot currently be fully understood due to the covert influence of shadowy power players.

A variety of state agencies have liaison offices in Hollywood today, from the FBI, to NASA and the Secret Service. Few of these agencies, though, have much to offer in exchange for favourable storylines, and so their influence in Hollywood is minimal. The major exception here is the Department of Defense, which has an ‘open’ but barely publicized relationship with Tinsel Town, whereby, in exchange for advice, men and invaluable equipment, such as aircraft carriers and helicopters, the Pentagon routinely demands flattering script alterations. Examples of this policy include changing the true identity of a heroic military character in Black Hawk Down (2001) due to his real-life status as a child rapist; the removal of a joke about “losing Vietnam” from the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and cutting images of Marines taking gold teeth from dead Japanese soldiers in Windtalkers (2002). Instances such as these are innumerable, and the Pentagon has granted its coveted “full cooperation” to a long list of contemporary pictures including Top Gun (1986), True Lies (1994), Executive Decision (1996), Air Force One (1997), The Sum of All Fears (2002), Transformers (2007), Iron Man (2008), as well as TV series such as JAG (1995-2005).

Such government activity, whilst morally dubious and barely advertised, has at least occurred within the public domain. This much cannot be said of the CIA’s dealings with Hollywood, which, until recently, went largely unacknowledged by the Agency. In 1996, the CIA announced with little fanfare the dry remit of its newly established Media Liaison Office, headed by veteran operative Chase Brandon. As part of its new stance, the CIA would now openly collaborate on Hollywood productions, supposedly in a strictly ‘advisory’ capacity.

The Agency’s decision to work publicly with Hollywood was preceded by the 1991 “Task Force Report on Greater CIA Openness,” compiled by CIA Director Robert Gates’ newly appointed ‘Openness Task Force,’ which secretly debated –ironically– whether the Agency should be less secretive. The report acknowledges that the CIA “now has relationships with reporters from every major wire service, newspaper, news weekly, and television network in the nation,” and the authors of the report note that this helped them “turn some ‘intelligence failure’ stories into ‘intelligence success’ stories, and has contributed to the accuracy of countless others.” It goes on to reveal that the CIA has in the past “persuaded reporters to postpone, change, hold, or even scrap stories that could have adversely affected national security interests…”

These admissions add weight to several reports and Congressional hearings from the 1970s which indicated that the CIA once maintained a deep-rooted and covert presence in national and international media, informally dubbed “Operation Mockingbird.” In its 1991 report, the CIA acknowledged that it had, in fact, “reviewed some film scripts about the Agency, documentary and fictional, at the request of filmmakers seeking guidance on accuracy and authenticity.” But the report is at pains to state that, although the CIA has “facilitated the filming of a few scenes on Agency premises,” it does “not seek to play a role in filmmaking ventures.” But it seems highly implausible that the CIA, whilst maintaining a decades-long presence in media and academia, would have shown no interest in the hugely influential Cinema industry.

Indeed, it should come as no surprise that the CIA has been involved in a number of recent blockbusters and TV series. The 2001 CBS TV series, The Agency, executive produced by Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, Air Force One) was actually co-written by ex-CIA agent and Marine Bazzel Baz, with additional ex-CIA agents working as consultants. The CIA gladly opened its doors to the production, and facilitated both external and internal shots of its Langley headquarters as the camera gazed lovingly at the CIA seal. This arrangement was comparable to the Feds’ efforts on the popular TV series The FBI (1965-74) which was shaped by the Bureau in cooperation with ABC and which thanked J. Edgar Hoover in the credits of each episode. Similarly, The Agency glorified the actions of US spooks as they fought predictable villains including the Russian military, Arab and German terrorists, Columbian drug dealers, and Iraqis. One episode even shows the CIA saving the life of Fidel Castro; ironically, since the CIA in real life had made repeated attempts to assassinate the Cuban President. Promos for the show traded on 9/11, which had occurred just prior to its premiere, with tag lines like “Now, more than ever, we need the CIA.”

A TV movie, In the Company of Spies (1999) starring Tom Berenger depicted a retired CIA operative returning to duty to save captured Agency officers held by North Korea. The CIA was so enthusiastic about this product that it hosted its presentation, cooperated during production, facilitated filming at Langley, and provided fifty off-duty officers as extras, according to its website.

Espionage novelist Tom Clancy has enjoyed an especially close relationship with the CIA. In 1984, Clancy was invited to Langley after writing The Hunt for Red October, which was later turned into the 1990 film. The Agency invited him again when he was working on Patriot Games (1992), and the movie adaptation was, in turn, granted access to Langley facilities. More recently, The Sum of All Fears (2002) depicted the CIA as tracking down terrorists who detonate a nuclear weapon on US soil. For this production, CIA director George Tenet gave the filmmakers a personal tour of the Langley HQ; the film’s star, Ben Affleck also consulted with Agency analysts, and Chase Brandon served as on-set advisor.

Media sources indicate that the CIA also worked on the Anthony Hopkins/Chris Rock feature Bad Company (2002) and the Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster Enemy of the State (2001). However, no details whatsoever about these appear to be in the public domain. Similarly, Spy Game director Tony Scott’s DVD commentary for said film indicates that he visited Langley whilst in pre-production but, according to one report, endorsement appeared to have been withheld after Chase Brandon read the final draft of the script.

More details than usual emerged about CIA involvement in the Tom Hanks movie Charlie Wilsons War (2007) and Robert De Niro’s The Good Shepherd (2006) – but not many. Milt Bearden had traveled to the Moscow Film Festival with De Niro and claims the pair then “disappeared and hung out with the mob and KGB crowd for a while. I introduced him to generals and colonels, the old guys I had been locked with for so many years.” De Niro later tagged along with Beardon to Pakistan. “We wandered around the North-West Frontier Province,” Bearden recalls, “crossed the bridge [to Afghanistan] I built years ago, hung out with a bunch of guys firing off machine guns and drinking tea.” Still, The Good Shepherd didn’t fulfill the CIA’s earnest hopes of being the CIA equivalent of Flags of Our Fathers (2006), which the Agency’s official historian says it should have been – all in the interests of what he calls a “culture of truth.”

Charlie Wilson’s War depicted the United States’ covert efforts to supply arms to Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union in the 1980s which had the real-life consequence of America’s old ally turned against it in the form of al-Qaeda (as Crile explains in the book of the film). However, Beardon, who was the CIA agent who supplied the weapons, worked as consultant on the film and said prior to its release that it “will put aside the notion that because we did that, we had 9/11.” CIA involvement in the film therefore appears to have paid dividends.

The real reasons for the CIA adopting an “advisory” role on all of these productions are thrown into sharp relief by a solitary comment from former Associate General Counsel to the CIA, Paul Kelbaugh. In 2007, whilst at a College in Virginia, Kelbaugh delivered a lecture on the CIA’s relationship with Hollywood, at which a local journalist was present. The journalist (who now wishes to remain anonymous) wrote a review of the lecture which related Kelbaugh’s discussion of the 2003 thriller The Recruit, starring Al Pacino. The review noted that, according to Kelbaugh, a CIA agent was on set for the duration of the shoot under the guise of a consultant, but that his real job was to misdirect the filmmakers: “We didn’t want Hollywood getting too close to the truth,” the journalist quoted Kelbaugh as saying.

Peculiarly, in a strongly-worded email to the authors, Kelbaugh emphatically denied having made the public statement and claimed that he remembered “very specific discussions with senior [CIA] management that no one was ever to misrepresent to affect [film] content – EVER.” The journalist considers Kelbaugh’s denial “weird,” and told us that “after the story came out, he [Kelbaugh] emailed me and loved it… I think maybe it’s just that because [the lecture] was ‘just in Lynchburg’ he was okay with it – you know, like, no one in Lynchburg is really going to pay much attention to it, I guess. Maybe that’s why he said it, and maybe that’s why he’s denying it now.” The journalist stands by the original report, and Kelbaugh has pointedly refused to engage us in further discussion on the matter.

Early Screening

Clandestine agencies have a long history of interference in the cinema industry. Letters discovered in the Eisenhower Presidential Library from the secret agent Luigi G. Luraschi (identified by British academic John Eldridge), the Paramount executive who worked for the CIA’s Psychological Strategy Board (PSB), reveal just how far the CIA was able to reach into the film industry in the early days of the Cold War, despite its claims that it sought no such influence.

For instance, Luraschi reported that he had secured the agreement of several casting directors to subtly plant “well dressed negroes” into films, including “a dignified negro butler” who has lines “indicating he is a free man” in Sangaree (1953) and in a golf club scene in the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis vehicle The Caddy (1953). Elsewhere, CIA arranged the removal of key scenes from the film Arrowhead (1953), which questioned America’s treatment of Apache Indians, including a sequence where a tribe is forcibly shipped and tagged by the US Army. Such changes were not part of a ham-fisted campaign to instill what we now call “political correctness” in the populace. Rather, they were specifically enacted to hamper the Soviets’ ability to exploit its enemy’s poor record in race relations and served to create a peculiarly anodyne impression of America, which was, at that time, still mired in an era of racial segregation.

Other efforts were made. The PSB tried –unsuccessfully– to commission Frank Capra to direct Why We Fight the Cold War and to provide details to filmmakers about conditions in the USSR in the hope that they would use them in their movies. More successfully, in 1950, the CIA –along with other secretive organizations like the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) and aided by the PSB– bought the rights to and invested in the cartoon of George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1954), which was given an anti-Soviet spin to satisfy its covert investors. Author Daniel Leab has pointed to the fact it took decades for the rumours about CIA involvement in Animal Farm to be properly documented; this, he observes, “Speaks volumes about the ability of a government agency to keep its activities covert.”

Additionally, the production of the Michael Redgrave featureNineteen-Eighty Four (1956) was in turn overseen by the American Committee for Cultural Freedom, which was supervised by the CIA. Key points in the movie were altered to demonise the Soviets.

The CIA also tampered with the 1958 film version of The Quiet American, provoking the author, Graham Greene, to denounce the film. US Air Force Colonel Edward Lansdale, the CIA operative behind Operation Mongoose (the CIA sabotage and assassination campaign against Cuba) had entered into production correspondence with director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who accepted his ideas. These included a change to the final scene in which we learn that Redgrave’s anti-hero has been hoodwinked by the Communists into murdering the suspicious American, who turns out not to be a bomb-maker as we had been led to believe, but instead a manufacturer of children’s toys.

 Behind the Scenes

It would be a mistake to regard the CIA as unique in its involvement in Hollywood. The industry is in fact fundamentally open to manipulation by a range of state agencies. In 2000, it emerged that the White House’s drug war officers had spent tens of millions of dollars paying the major US networks to inject anti-drug plots into the scripts of primetime series such as ER, The Practice, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Chicago Hope. Despite criticism for this blatant propagandizing, the government continued to employ this method of spreading its message on drugs.

The White House went to Tinsel Town again the following year when, on November 11, 2001 a meeting was held in Hollywood between President Bush’s then Deputy Chief of Staff, Karl Rove, and representatives of each of the major Hollywood studios to discuss how the film industry might contribute to the ‘War on Terror.’ Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America said with a straight face that, “content was off the table”, but Rove had clearly outlined a series of requests. It is hard to gauge the consequences of the meeting, but a Rambo sequel, for instance, was certainly discussed, and duly produced. Similarly, several series with national security themes emerged within a short time of the meeting including She Spies (2002-2004) and Threat Matrix (2003).

The meeting was, in fact, just one in a series between Hollywood and the White House from October to December, 2001. On October 17, in response to 9/11, the White House announced the formation of its “Arts and Entertainment Task Force,” and by November, Valenti had assumed leadership of Hollywood’s new role in the ‘War on Terror’. As a direct result of meetings, Congress sought advice from Hollywood insiders on how to shape an effective wartime message to America and to the world. In November 2001, John Romano, writer-producer of the popular US TV series Third Watch, advised the House International Relations Committee that the content of Hollywood productions was a key part of shaping foreign perceptions of America.

On December 5, 2001, the powerful Academy of Television Arts & Sciences convened its own panel entitled “Hollywood Goes to War?” to discuss what the industry might do in response to 9/11. Representing the government at the meeting were Mark McKinnon, a White House advisor, and the Pentagon’s chief entertainment liaison, Phil Strub. Also in attendance, among others, were Jeff Zucker, President of NBC Entertainment, and Aaron Sorkin, creator and writer of the White House drama The West Wing (1999-2006). Immediately after, Sorkin and his team set about producing a special episode of the show dealing with a massive terrorist threat to America entitled “Isaac and Ishmael”. The episode was given top priority and was successfully completed and aired within just ten days of the meeting. The product championed the superiority of American values whilst brimming with rage against the Islamist jihadists.

The interlocking of Hollywood and national security apparatuses remains as tight as ever: ex-CIA agent Bob Baer told us, “There’s a symbiosis between the CIA and Hollywood” and revealed that former CIA director George Tenet is currently, “out in Hollywood, talking to studios.” Baer’s claims are given weight by the Sun Valley meetings, annual get-togethers in Idaho’s Sun Valley in which several hundred of the biggest names in American media –including every major Hollywood studio executive– convene to discuss collective media strategy for the coming year. Against the idyllic backdrop of expansive golf courses, pine forests and clear fishing lakes, deals are struck, contracts are signed, and the face of the American media is quietly altered. The press has yet to be granted permission to report on these corporate media gatherings and so the exact nature of what is discussed at the events has never been publicly disclosed. It is known, however, that Tenet was keynote speaker at Sun Valley in 2003 (whilst still CIA head) and again in 2005.

Conclusions

Many would recoil at the thought of modern Hollywood cinema being used as a propagandist tool, but the facts seem to speak for themselves. Do agencies such as the CIA have the power, like the Pentagon, to affect movie content by providing much-sought-after expertise, locations and other benefits? Or are they able to affect script changes through simple persuasion, or even coercion? Do they continue to carry out covert actions in Hollywood as they did so extensively in the 1950s, and, beyond cinema, might covert government influence play some part in the creation of national security messages in TV series such as 24 and Alias (the star of the latter, Jennifer Garner, even made an unpaid recruitment video for the CIA)? The notion that covert agencies aspire to be more open is hard to take seriously when they provide such scant information about their role within the media, even regarding activities from decades past. The spy may have come in from the cold, but he continues to shelter in the shadows of the movie theatre.

PROVOCATION: US Archeologist Proposes To Privatize Greek Antiquities in TIME Magazine!

Can you privatize a nation? The sun? The air? Sounds silly doesn't it? Of course it does. This is why we were not surprised to read a proposal by a well-known archaeologist at the weekend which was published in TIME magazine suggesting that we (partially) sell off our ancient antiquities.

(Question: What is partially anyway? Can you be partially pregnant, or just pregnant?)

Yes you heard correctly, this man claims that the Greek government should partially privatize Greek antiquities and allow private security companies to undertake the guarding and promoting of these sites in the framework of amplifying (or rather making money from) the number of tourists that visit these sites every year.

Stephen Miller, an American archaeologist who has spent the last four decades unearthing Nemea’s treasures told TIME that although the Greek Ministry of Culture does a great job at  conserving these antiquities, they are lousy businessmen. And what's more he thinks that because there is a lack of (Disney world-style) hotels and restaurants to serve visitors at all these antiquity sites we are failing at capitalizing on their worth.

Before commenting on his proposals we just want to repeat that this man is suggesting that we hire private security companies to protect antiquities that date back thousands of years, since they maybe in the future be looted and/or in danger...

So, is this how corporations plan to push their interests in the future?  Are they going to use experts to push their proposals to nations, and if these nations do not bite into their baits then accidents -such as looting, vandalism etc.- may begin to happen? Think this is a strong statement? Check out how the markets work, and you too will agree with us.

Anyone with an ounce of logic would first ask him if he know something we didn't about the security of these sites. And then we here at HellasFrappe would also like to ask him if he has any affiliation (and/or is a spokesman) of a foreign security company. Think about it. How do we know he has Greece's best intentions at heart when he boldly makes a proposal like this knowing very well that this country has lost half of its treasures from foreign looters for centuries?

HellasFrappe is 100 percent in favor of capitalism, but there are some things that are sacred and cannot be privatized. Remember how we felt when the German Bild magazine suggested that we sell our islands and even the Acropolis to pay off this nation's supposed debt? And remember a couple of weeks ago when one of the largest music companies in the world attempted to make royalties off of the Greek national anthem?

The Acropolis, our anthem, and Greece's archeological wealth are emblems of our nation. It is ridiculous to even think that they can be privatized.

Luckily for us, Culture Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos contacted Sony and the matter with the national anthem was apparently resolved. He also rejected the above proposal by Miller and/or any suggestion that aims to hand over the administration of GREEK sites to foreigners.
“The cultural wealth, the legacy of this country, will remain under state control because it belongs to the Greek people,” Mr. Panagiotopoulos told TIME.
He did suggest, however, that the Greek parliament recently passed a measure allowing tour companies to effectively rent out archaeological sites for events or out-of-hour visits. This sounds more reasonable, than actually handing over our sites to some greedy corporation in London, or California. But we cannot understand how having dinner next to an ancient statue of Zeus can be considered as entertaining. It is repulsive. These treasures are there to be glorified and should never be used by the 1% to push up their prestige.

He argues that if Greece created a Disneyland of sorts around all of its archeological sites then this would generate jobs and protect Greece’s vast archaeological wealth from the ravages of an economic crisis which has closed down ancient sites, shuttered museums and caused looting to surge. It probably would, but then people would visit Greece for these resorts and never once learn an ounce of history about the Cradle of civilization. Besides, all these virtual Las Vegas type of hotels around these sites will only lower their sophistication and their natural beauty.

Of course this would probably please some investor in London, or New York who only thinks about fattening his wallet, and it could possibly put food on the table to some families in Greece but don't let the facade of development fool you into believing that this will benefit our nation. The only thing that a proposal like this will achieve is making Kissinger very happy who has always wanted to strike at Greece's cultural history so that he and his NWO buddies can proceed with their destablization of the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. They have been trying to redraw boarders in our region since the ending of the World War, and their greatest obstacle is Greece.

We are a small nation yes, but we have pride, and we are sick and tired of foreigners coming in an pillaging our treasures for prestige and/or profit. We know that they have been doing this for hundreds and hundreds of years. Example: During the time of the Romans, Greek tombs were raided for artifacts to decorate nobles’ villas. Centuries later, invading foreign powers like Lord Elgin, Napoleon and the Nazis also took a huge share of our rich archaeological antiquities.

Till this day, all these treasures are illegally kept by all these cleptocrats!

The only thing that Mr. Miller achieved by publishing his proposal in TIME magazine is to revive memories of the plunders of the past. Greece's vast cultural wealth belongs to the Greek people! Our nation has been plundered enough by foreign nations and till this day we are still battling to bring home our treasures (example the Parthenon marbles).

Shame on him, and shame on TIME magazine for publishing this article.

Greece: The EU’s Neoliberal Poster Boy - The IMF vs Greece

(Economic Freefall via Global Research) - From a budget deficit at 120% of GDP in 2010 we are now hovering around 180% nearly four years into the worst crisis in living memory where GDP has fallen cumulatively by 25%, averaging 5% fall annually (whereas during the civil war it fell 12%!).

Unemployment has broken all EU records, hovering officially at 28% overall and 65% for the under 25year olds. Every year the claim is made that growth is returning, but the only growth on the horizon is unemployment (1.5m), soup kitchens, suicides (plus 5k) and homelessness.

Alleging they have created a budget surplus (by adding QE to the budget), the Government is being touted as the poster boy of the EU, but this has been done bu reducing Greeks to penury. All new wages (including doctors) are at E580; the pension age has shot up to 67, with 40 year contributions. The latter essentially means the end of pensions for there is no work available for even a discontinuous 40 year period, though there is ‘lots’ of part time work. In other words, a decade after the arrival of the Euro, hourly wages are now at E2.5 (£2).

The EU’s ‘Free Movement’ destroyed the Greek labour movement as Greece borders the ex-‘communist’ states of the Balkans. The oversupply of labour in a de-industrialising Greece led to a lowering of wages and the displacement of Greeks from the labour market.  It is well known that Greece has large numbers of illegal immigrants who work in a cash economy and send euros abroad. Figures from the Bank of Greece show that billions of Euros went to Albania, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Of course figures on repatriation of funds by illegals is a kind of surrogate indicating the extent of the immigration as well as a scourge for the health of the Greek economy and Greek working people. In 2004 there were 4.5m active workers now there are 2m.

The cost of the Olympics and NATO’s agreement that Greece should match Turkey’s arms spending in the ratio of 7 to 10, essentially bankrupted the country. The added burden of 72 new property taxes and a collapse in property prices of between 30-80% has led to a 90% collapse in all new building work. This was the capitalist economic model of the last couple of decades and it appears to be in permanent decline.

Raw Materials: Gold, Gas & Oil: Bonanzas for Multinationals

The Greek gas distribution company Despa was sold to Americans not Russians, who offered a better deal, will not be functioning for years. A gold mine in Skouries, Thessaloniki, was sold for peanuts to a Canadian conglomerate by the ex-PASOK finance minister, Papakonstantinou, with no share (or even royalties) for the Government. Protestors have been imprisoned on trumped-up charges with demonstrations as large as 30k in Thessaloniki (Greece’s 2nd city)

Health

The EU has done deals with Israeli pharmaceutical companies TEVA, via Germany, to import non-EU patented medicine for sale in Greece. The Greek pharmaceutical industry which employs over 20,000 people and supports over 30% of the domestic market will be shut down as a result. The model for this are the shipyards, airports and soon to be, railways and transport systems. The Samaras government is sacking contracted to the Greek NHS doctors by the hundreds (Finance Minister Georgiadis had a close escape in a meeting with them) and they have imposed E 25 charges to visit hospitals without taking into account the lack of medicines when one eventually manages to get into a hospital. The increase in mental health issues is such that, before the crisis, 1000 people yearly went to homes. Now it’s more than 3000, but most of the mental health institutions are on the verge of closure due to lack of funding.

ERT-Public Sector

The State broadcaster, ERT was shut down in just 24 hours despite the lie that they would be re-hired. It has ceased international broadcasting as a prelude to total cessation of public sector broadcasting. Victory of the state here became the green light for further mass sackings (school caretakers, municipal police etc.).

The EU’s rule means the imposition of externally determined budgetary constraints (25k sackings from the 700k strong public sector), making a public service media unviable. There is no other rule to require the existence of one so long as there is ‘pluralism’ i.e. more than one private sector provider of corporate ‘news’. This is directly linked to the Free Trade Agreement with the USA which seeks the abolition of the ‘cultural exception’ of national governments in cultural life so that Hollywood dominates above all else. This is directed most strongly at France, but would apply to all European nations. The contemporary capacity to wage this cultural assault is in total contrast to the circumstances of 1939 when Greece won an important ruling against a Belgian company for a railway contract when it defaulted alleging if a public service is threatened states have the right to default. (1)

The EU is funding propaganda equating ‘Nazism with Communism’ under ‘Europe for the Citizens’ programme for 2014-20 whereby each nation’s history is erased to create a ‘common European citizen’. Participants (i.e. media outlets and NGO’s) can claim up to Euro 100,000 for working towards this aim.

Massive strike wave

In the last twelve months strikes in the transport sector Metro, Seafarers and Secondary School Teachers, have been met with emergency strike bans in total conflict with all the agreements of the EU and ILO’s alleged ‘right to strike’. A strike by university administration staff facing sackings has been going on for 13 weeks with 3-4 of the main universities shut down for the last 3 months.

The conflict with the Troika and the collapsing Samaras government (which relies on 4 MPs to give it a majority) is now over continued mass sackings, repossessions of first homes and a land tax. As opposed to the rest of Europe, Greek home ownership was accrued primarily via work and not bank loans. So any new laws which aim to repossess properties on behalf of the parasitic banks will be met with fierce resistance, as has already been evidenced over electricity cut offs, imposed due to property taxes, which was eventually defeated on the streets. Thomson from the IMF said if you want a welfare policy buy tents.

None of the socio-economic indicators have improved over the four year programme and none of the declared aims have achieved anything more than a massive worsening of standards of life.

The crisis has no end in sight despite all the official pronouncements and the contradictions building up in the foundations of the EZ are so large than when the debt crisis re-merges again(ECB’s money printing ceases) it will make the previous one feel like a walk down the park. Only by breaking up the EU-EZ leaving its budgetary controls can nations embark on a different course.

The irony is that the majority ‘left’ forces in Greece want a Europe of the ‘peoples’ whilst the euro-sceptics want a Europe of ‘nations’ when what is at stake that there is no common Europe for the common man but only for the multinationals and the centrifugal forces pulling it apart raises hope that the sooner it dissolves the better.

NO MYTH: Even Foreign News Reports Confirm Golden Dawn Popularity

By John Ward (The Slog) - The latest opinion poll from Greece has a more robust sample than the last, but confirms its findings… and establishes as clear fact that Golden Dawn is now the largest Party by voting intentions in the Hellenic Republic.

CLICK HERE for details about this public opinon poll, as well as a video report posted by HellasFrappe on Friday)

The results combine the findings of two online polls conducted by electronic newspaper Zougla.gr over the last two weeks.Golden Dawn has consolidated its lead with 22.6%, followed by SYRIZA with 19.2% and New Democracy (effectively the ruling Party) third with just 16.7%. Independent Greeks and KKE are on 4.9% each, with junior Venizelos-led Coalition Party PASOK near-insignificant at 4.5%.

Assuming some horse-trading on Right and Left, we are still looking at a stand-off in the next election. All told, what we have here is Right 35% and Left 25%. But even though one could produce a Government with neither Syriza or GD in it, this would be a suicidal thing (socially) for any Establishment to attempt: disenfranchising 3 voters in 5 isn’t a very clever strategy.

There are however some astonishing new signs on the “where votes were gained and lost” dimension. For example, 16% of SYRIZA defecters went to Golden Dawn…. suggesting that some Greeks care nothing for political ideology, they will just back anyone who stands up to the Troika and Brussels. The new GD support is also heavily biased towards middle class, fully-educated respondents.

A psephology source in Athens observes, “The impetus behind to Golden Dawn among well educated people from all over Greece shows that Greeks are looking for a National leader with clear Patriotic, national priority and not political messages. It also states very clearly that Greeks will turn their back on Europe if it continues this ridiculous saga. As long as European and Greek government politicians do not undertand this, the numbers of GD and other nationalism parties will rise [because they] put their country first and on top of everything and everybody. This is to do with the values of a nation, of the family, of the culture.”

Support will grow further for Golden Dawn once voters wake up to the reality that debt relief has been cancelled, and default some time in the Spring of 2014 is now inevitable.

Last April the Slog posted an article about SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras as follows:
‘I suspect the truth is that Tsipras is already leaking support further down the social scale as he backs away from EU and geopolitical confrontation…’
In September the author the Slog also posted this from Kalamata:
‘Greece’s Leftist rainbow from disgruntled Pasokists via Syriza to the KKE needs to wake up fast… The same Patriotic Liberal/Left Front is required as that created before and during the ejection of the Colonels’ Junta. This time however, it must eject over time three things from Greece: Establishment corruption, the euro, and rule from Brussels.’
Tsipras has failed to take note of this. So the baton is passing to Golden Dawn.

This is a crucial moment for SYRIZA. Either Tsipras bites the bullet, becomes more inclusive and rejects foreign rule by madmen, or he will increasingly be seen as just another collaborator. And he does not have a lot of time to decide.

SHOCK - New Public Opinion Poll Places Golden Dawn in First Place! (VIDEOS)

It looks like the crackdown against the Golden Dawn party, that resulted with the imprisonment of its leadership on a flimsy indictment, is not only turning into a boomerang for the establishment, but is allowing the ultra-right party to gain even more popularity with voters.

A shocking public opinion poll was presented late on Thursday night on veteran reporter Makis Triantafyllopoulos' news show, after being conducted by his online news site "Zougla.gr". According to the results, Golden Dawn's popularity is rising very quickly, and in one of the two polls presented it was even shown to be in first place (as far as voting intentions are concerned). Certainly this radical change in the balance of power shocked his guests, but nonetheless should have been expected. In the first poll, as well as in the second, SYRIZA is also shown as having a high percentage -or above the New Democracy party- but Antonis Samaras is still considered as being most suitable for prime minister as opposed to Alexis Tsipras.

In the second poll, Golden Dawn received 22.6% of the vote, followed by SYRIZA with 19.2% and New Democracy with 16.7%. The Independent Greeks party and the Greek Communist party (KKE) both scored 4.9%, PASOK 4.5%, while DIMAR barely received 1.1%.

The voting intentions of the valid and the obscure vote was estimated at 14.9%.  The percentages are as follows: Golden Dawn 26.6%, SYRIZA 22.6%, New Democracy 19.6%, the Independent Greeks party as well as KKE 5.8%.

Kassidiaris New Golden Dawn Leader, Or Plan By The Establishment To Crush The Party?

So far all the events that led to the persecution of Golden Dawn have crumbled, and although the party began to suffer the repercussions in the first few days (as witnessed in the polls), it is now slowly rising in popularity again. This has worried the establishment greatly and that is one of the reasons we believe that they are moving on to Plan C. In fact, Plan C began to unfold on Sunday in an exclusive report in the RealNews newspaper. According to the author there are two fronts in the Golden Dawn party. One that is more loyal to the party leader Nikos Michaloliakos (hardliners), and one that is loyal to party spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris (softer sort).

If you are shaking your head at this point then wait till we go into details about what this report said. But before we do that, we just have to say that the same people who up until a week ago insulted, verbally attacked and stigmatized this young boy as a "Nazi extremist" or a "dispassionate ferelpi leader" are viewing him as a more "acceptable" leader for the ultra-nationalist party.

Is the establishment that naive? Or does it believe that Golden Dawn is a bourgeois party where it can play a game of "divide and conquer" so as to weaken the party?

Number two of course!

Why so surprised? We have seen this in the past, against many Greek politicians and against various political parties. The establishment always uses the mainstream media to spread propaganda and create a buzz. Once they do that,  and before you know it, some of the mud actually begins sticking to the source they are targeting.

Take for example the issue of Costas Karamanlis, the case of Vatopedi, or even the war in Iraq. In all these cases, the mainstream media was used to spread falsifications and lies so as to change public opinion.

Now they are targeting the Golden Dawn party. But in this case they are ignoring one fundamental thing, the internal structure and code of honor of the nationalist party. With everything that we have read about this party, this cannot be easily broken and/or bruised.

The report in RealNews, as seen at the bottom of the page, says that an anticipated change in GD's leadership might be unfolding now that Nikos Michaloliakos is behind bars. According to the author, Ilias Kassidiaris is a fresh voice, that could alter the image of the Golden Dawn party. And although we agree with what he/she is trying to say, because Kassidiaris is a charismatic and well-educated young man, we can not help but smirk because the intentions of the article are more than obvious. They want to create a rift inside the party, and/or two camps.

So what does the article say: It says that disruptive tendencies, which may possibly lead to the creation of the Golden Dawn ... of the domestic, and international sort are presently manifesting following a clash of differences between Michaloliakos and Kassidiaris. A clash, which the paper notes, peaked following the fatal shootings of two Golden Dawn members in Neo Heraklio two weeks ago.

This friction within GD, adds the article, was apparently noted (among other things) in classified intelligence reports and were given to the Ministry of Public Order, and are the result of intelligence gathering from several officers who began focusing their investigations on GD following the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas.

Sorry guys... But we here at HellasFrappe are a little skeptical about this one. Besides, we have witnessed Nikos Hatzinikolaoy work his magic in the past against Costas Karamanlis. Let us not forget that because of reporters like him (or in this case publisher) Karamanlis was discredited in the face of his voters. Also... He is a favorite of the establishment. This alone explains a lot.

Nonetheless if you want to read the report then click on the .pdf link below. Just keep in mind that it is only in the Greek language.

Chaos, Murders of Fyssas & Golden Dawn Members, Intelligence Agencies & The State

The following article was featured in this Sunday's Edition of the Dimokratia newspaper from Savas Kalteridis. Please note that a word for word translation was not feasible because the article would not make sense in English.

On October 18, 2013 Pavlos Fyssas fell dead in Amfiali (Keratsini, Piraeus) at the hand of George Roupakias, who some said was a comrade of the Golden Dawn party. The victim was  a well-known rapper and militant anti-fascist, who expressed his political views and opinions through his music!

The perpetrator, a former Leftist, was a blue-collar worker who had recently jumped to the other side and began embracing the ideologies of the Golden Dawn party in the area of Nikea (Piraeus). The Nikea branch of Golden Dawn aimed to weaken the presence of the Left in the area and specifically the Greek Communist party's PAME group which traditionally had a strong influence in the area (or the neighborhoods of Piraeus B constituency).

So basically the area had two fronts (or two extremes), and they were bound to clash at some point or another. It was just a matter of time. Of course the government knew what was going on, but as with many other things, our lawmakers refused to touch the subject. In fact in the run-up to Fyssas' murder, some believe that the status quo, was rather more concentrated on the popularity of the Golden Dawn party rather than the explosive climate that was brewing in this neighborhood.

At the same time, there was concern, and consequent pressure from international players towards Greece about the gradual increase that the Golden Dawn party was receiving in the polls. (Remeber what the DIMAR MP and former Minister of Justice said about American and EU pressure?)

A few days after Fyssas' tragic death, the degradation of Golden Dawn began, with unprecedented and relentless psychological warfare by the domestic and foreign media, while the party leader and two deputies were apprehended, and actions were taken against other members.

While Golden Dawn was being persecuted, its members were being targeted by self proclaimed anti-fascists and anti-authoritarians, who assumed the role of legislator, judge and executor ...!

And this continued up until two madmen shot and killed in cold blood two young members of the Golden Dawn party, or George Fountouli and Manolis Kapelonis and seriously injured Alexander Gerontas (who incidentally is still in critical condition).

Even when public opinion was left dumbfounded while watching the bloody images of the shootings that were leaked to the media, the political system, as noted earlier, did not adopt the same attitude. In fact it acted swiftly in the case of Pavlos Fyssas whereas in the murder of the GD members our lawmakers were no where to be found. Obviously this violates many principles, including that which says that even enemies that fall to their death are entitled to enjoy some type of honor.

But let us not dwell on what our lawmakers did, or didn't do, even though it just further discredits the whole political system and only increases the popularity of Golden Dawn (because Greeks always innate sympathy to anyone who is wronged or hurt by the system). Let us rather examine the views of those who spoke about the settling of scores, or the engagement of secret services in this obviously tragic crime.

At present there is no evidence that can determine who the executioners are and especially why these murders occurred.

That is why many are convinced that it was carried out by a team of anti-authoritarians because their operational tactics are well known in Greece and have been for four decades now. In fact, in their world, the assassination of Fyssas is equivalent to the invasion and occupation of Greece from Turkey.  (Believe it)

What do we mean?

If Greece was invaded by Turkey tomorrow morning, the Greek army would act swiftly and without a second thought, because their obligation is to uphold the safety and welfare of all Greeks and Greece in accordance to the Greek constitution. Well anti-authoritarians work in a similar way. They have their own laws and guidelines and feel compelled to intervene at any given moment in the framework of bringing order in their own ranks (or in this case against those that forced the murder of anti-fascist Pavlos Fyssas).

This is basically how the stage was set, from both sides of the coin, but this is also how the road opened to foreign intelligence services as well.

At this point we should note that foreign intelligence agencies found the right time, and the grounds, to act, while some idiots were busy creating the perfect setting and the right conditions!

Those who speak about the involvement of secret services in this case, should first reflect on their own responsibilities, as well as how they helped to dismantle the state apparatus where partisanship was allowed to destroy even the most sensitive services of the Greek state. Let us not forget that the top priority of these services is to prevent such actions from foreign intelligence services in Greece.

SHOCK - Secret Poll Puts Golden Dawn in First Place

By John Ward (The Slog) - A regular source late on Monday night informed the Slog with updated opinion/voting behaviour research carried out secretly by senior political players in Greece. Astonishingly, the study has the Far Right Golden Dawn Party in first place, followed closely by the Leftist Party SYRIZA.

As predicted by the Slog last month, the attempt by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to frame the far-right Golden Dawn party in the case of the murder of a young Leftist has backfired. The last poll from this source had GD in 2nd place. The Party has now taken over the top spot.

Between 25-29th of October, 1,423 Greeks were polled about their voting intentions. Golden Dawn scored 22%, followed very closely by SYRIZA. New Democracy (the governing Party in Coalition with PASOK) came a very poor third. Men and older respondents are significantly more likely to vote Golden Dawn than women and the young.

Two Golden Dawn members were murdered last week, after the Poll took place. It is likely that this will have strengthened rather than weakened sympathy among traditional Greeks for the Far Right Party.

The author of the Slog has been traveling into, out of, and around Greece since last March. While the author says he is surprised by the size of the Golden Dawn revival, he is not remotely surprised by the confrontation now boiling up between the Hard Left and the Hard Right. Middle class and skilled working class Greeks talk openly about the possibility of Civil War and/or a military putsch. Senior professional and other well-off Greeks still seem to be living in a bubble – as are the bureaucratic and political classes.

According to him, the country is heading towards a classic reversion to the extreme, caused by an economic crisis massively exacerbated by Brussels-am-Berlin austerity obsession. The support for Golden Dawn has jumped further since EC commissioner Olli Rehn admitted late last month that debt relief for Greece was to be delayed. The west European and US mainstream media may have lost interest in Greece, but they need to reverse that apathy with all speed.

Kassidiaris & Voridis Brawl In Parliament - Triandafyllopoulos: New Poll Shows Golden Dawn As 1st Party! (VIDEOS)

Golden Dawn is leading in the latest public opinion polls, above all other parties, according to zoogla.gr. (At 58 minutes into the video below). This was announced earlier this evening when veteran reporter Makis Triandafyllopoulos interviewed GD press spokesman Elias Kassidiaris on his Internet zoogla.gr channel's "The Unkown M" show. Triandafyllopoulos said that the public opinion poll was gathering results for about a week, and that he was astonished with the results, but he refused to go into more details about this and said that those interested should log onto his site. On his part, Kassidiaris called for the immediate release the party's Secretary General Nikos Michaloliakos as well as two other members Christos Pappas and Mr. Lagos.

Earlier in the day at the Greek parliament, Kassidiaris battled it out with New Democracy parliamentary spokesman Makis Voridis. The GD spokesman criticized Voridis for his past political choices, which he added, have never been scrutinized, yet these same choices were the cause for the jailing of some of the members from his own political party. Specifically, he said that three decades ago Mr. Voridis was photographed standing under a nazi flag, yet this has never been slammed by the Greek press in contrast to Mr. Pappas who was immediately labelled a nazi.

(Video below with opening of Kassidiaris' comments was just uploaded on youtube, when we attempted to view it. it was a bit difficult, but at least his speech is heard. Be patient)
"You call us fascists and offend us, but the chattery parliamentary representative of the New Democracy has yet to respond to our answer why in the past he posed in front of Nazi posters and billboards of (junta leader) Georgios Papadopoulos, and today he speaks about democracy and the New Democracy party," said Kassidiaris.
The answer parliamentary from Voridis was immediate.
"I have explained this well over 30 times. Some (parliamentarians) from the Left parties (in parliament) tell me that I have not repented. Now from Golden Dawn I hear that I should explain why I gave a speech while standing in front of a poster of Papadopoulos. The answer is because I was in EPEN, something that is known by all."
(The National Political Union, better known as EPEN was a Greek far-right political party. The party was founded on January 30, 1984 by jailed former junta leader Georgios Papadopoulos. It participated (unsuccessfully) in the 1985 general election. In the 1984 elections to the European Parliament, the party polled 2.3% of the vote, giving it one of the 24 seats held by Greece. Wikipedia)

Voridis said that the choices that he made over three decades ago have nothing to do with his political ideology today, and are well-known.
"Acting like 1000 Cardinals they come to criticize me about my views 30 years ago ... They can say (anything they want) from morning until night. For me the this has expired " added Voridis.
Following this, Kassidiaris asked to respond to Voridis' statements, but once he began doing so, the head of parliament interrupted him and shut off his microphone. This pushed Kassidiaris over the limit.

(We agree with Voridis, but it seems to us that he is applying a what is good for the goose is always not good for the gander philosophy. Three decades ago he was a young lad, who chose to be photographed under a flag of junta leaders, or Nazi symbols, yet this was never weighed against his character today, and one has to wonder, then why was it used against Mr. Pappas who is now sitting in a jail because of the very same thing.)

(Video below was the continuation of Kassidaris' and Voridis' argument. After the head of parliament prohibited Kassidaris from responding he came back with a few more statements.

Following this, Kassidiaris complained that his mobile phone, as well as those of other members from his party were being tapped into illegally and he then gave a specific example:
"Last Friday my colleagues Koukoutsis, Panayiotaros Boukouras and Kouzilos and myself spoke on our mobile phones and decided to go to the Eleusina Toll Stations to hand out some leaflets. When we arrived, and without having disclosed anything to anyone, three squads of riot police were waiting for us and prohibited us from distributing any political documentation".
He then said that a police officer informed him the distribution of brochures was prohibited. Because of this Kassidiaris announced that his party is planning to file a lawsuit against the specific officer as well as the leadership of the Greek police force and the Ministry of Citizen Protection for not respecting his party's democratic rights.

In other news, the Greek Police on Wednesday announced the results of an internal affairs investigation into allegations of links between the force and the ultra-right Golden Dawn, saying that 10 officers were found to be linked “directly or indirectly” to the party but insisting that there were no indications of organized cells operating within the police. Police officials told a press conference that the probe, which started last month, focused on 319 officers of whom 15 were arrested and 10 ultimately linked to Golden Dawn. Most of these 10 officers were guards that had been assigned to GD lawmakers, police officials said. But, according to the report, the probe found no evidence of “organized cells” aligned to Golden Dawn within the force. It did highlight “the inadequate supervision” of officers however.

(Some info on Voridis so you guys can get a better understanding of what hypocrisy is all about: Voridis graduated from Athens College and acquired his degree from the Law School of the University of Athens. He also acquired a Master of Laws with merit from University College London. Voridis specialized in international commercial law, penal law, and the philosophy of law. During his time there, he was a member of the fascist student group "Student Alternative". Voridis has denied any connection with far-right and has described himself as a national liberal. According to a former fellow student at Athens College, writing in Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Voridis formed the fascist student group "Free Pupils" that painted the walls with swastikas and saluted each other using the Nazi-era greeting "Heil Hitler." It was further alleged that during school elections, Voridis would violently threaten the Jewish students who opposed his fascist group, as well as their families. Wikipedia)

Kammenos Also Labels PASOK A "Criminal Organization" (VIDEOS)

The leader of the Independent Greek party Panos Kammenos on Tuesday characterized the socialist PASOK party as a criminal organization on reporter Nikos Chatzinikolaoy's "Eniko" show. The same accusation has been leveled against Golden Dawn and members of its leadership who have been in custody since last month, and it was once again heard last weekend by New Democracy prefect of Thessaloniki Mr. Tzitzikostas.

In a statement, the PASOK party said that Kammenos' anti-bailout Independent Greeks “would-be allies of the far right” and once again noted that the socialist party is the victim of a “sustained attack”.

On his part Kammenos suggested that PASOK should be considered a criminal organization because a number of its members have been linked to corruption scandals, but only former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos has been tried and convicted so far.
“Why were they covering for them?” said Kammenos.
“What PASOK has offered to society is well known and does not need to be proved through certification,” responded the Socialist party, which also attacked SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras, who have pursued closer relations with the Independent Greeks in recent months.
Perhaps a bit worrying for Kammenos, though, was the reaction of members of his own party, who felt he had gone a little over board with his criticism of PASOK. Specifically, his party spokesman Terence Quick was quoted by reporters as saying that he does not agree with the term "criminal organization" to describe PASOK,” and said it was a bit exaggerated.

(Watch video below where Trangas asks Kammenos why he made the statements he made on the Enikos show)

NEW Secret Opinion Polls - If Elections Were Held Tomorrow PASOK Would Barely Reach 3%

PASOK is sinking quicker than a rambling man in a sea of quicksand. Two secret polls that were apparently commissioned by PASOK show that the socialists are not making any headway with voters and if national elections were held tomorrow they would barely gather 3% of the vote ( and only 2% in the 18-30 age group).

A report on defencent claims that at this rate the socialists would only be able to gain 10-12 seats in Parliament, but over time, or until the next elections are held, PASOK's image will wear and tear even more and it is very doubtful that they will even reach the required 3%. In fact the report noted that this percentage would not surpass the 2.5 mark.

So where are all of PASOK's supporters going? The answer is obvious, the majority is moving over to SYRIZA which is leading the governing New Democracy party by a comfortable 2-4 percentage points.

At PASOK party headquarters workers remain unpaid, even though PASOK has accumulated hundreds of millions in state grants.

In the state of Achaia, which is traditionally GREEN, or George Papandreou's home base, PASOK is also dropping in popularity and believe it or not Golden Dawn is rising!

Specifically, an opinion poll conducted by the DATA RC company shows a gap between the two major political parties at 10.7 percentage points - SYRIZA is rising rapidly in this state, the popularity of the New Democracy is dropping. SYRIZA apparently gains 34.1 %, while New Democracy has dropped to 23.4% and the Golden Dawn party is following in third at 10.1%!

Figures and Poll Featured on ifimerida

  • SYRIZA 34.1%
  • New Democracy - 23.4%
  • Golden Dawn - 10.1%
  • KKE 5.8%
  • PASOK 5%
  • Independent Greeks 4.4%
  • Ecologists - 2.6%
  • DIMAR 2%
  • Other Political Parties - 12.5%

SHOCK - PASOK Collapses, Syriza Leads - Golden Dawn In 2nd place - Secret Poll

(THE SLOG) - On Thursday, the Slog published a story revealing findings from a "secret ballot" quantitative research polling that was undertaken by what the blog says from the American Embassy in Greece. The results, claims the article, spells trouble for Prime Minister Antonis Samaras … and present Brussels with even bigger problems.

In a sensational development, results from an opinion poll allowing respondents to keep their final voting intentions "secret" during the interview show some astonishing developments since the Coalition "crackdown" on Golden Dawn. This is the state of the Parties as recorded by the study (%):
  • Syriza (Left)  23.5
  • Golden Dawn (Far Right) 17.5
  • New Democracy (Conservative) 13.5
  • KKE (Communist) 5.5
  • ANEL (Conservative) 4.5
  • PASOK (Venizelos) 2.9
  • Plan B (Anti-Troika) 2.5
  • DIMAR (Pro-Pasok) 2.2
  • Others c. 20
  • Undecided c. 10.0
In a recent Slog post, it seemed likely that the “collapse” in Golden Dawn support had been overstated by open questioning: given the chance to keep their extremism quiet, older more traditional Greeks are siding with GD’s “patriotism” and avowed policy of helping the old on a district-by-district basis. Whatever any of us may feel about the neo-Nazis, this strategy has very successful. We must also reluctantly take our hats off to American psephologists, who probably still lead the world in the study of voting behaviour … and how to tell lies from truth.

As both the Lenders and the IMF represent America more or less directly, we can be sure that Brussels and Berlin are already aware of this result.

Meanwhile, in an as yet unconfirmed report, bizarrely the Slog was told that ‘a significant number of members of the parliament, who belong to New Democracy, but they are coming from the part of New Democracy which is the old part that belongs to Konstantinos Karamanlis (the founder of New Democracy and that who took the country after the Junta of 1974) are very very disappointed with what ND has become under Samaras. They may be in secret discussions which may include even the possibility of supporting SYRIZA, if SYRIZA is going to fight Troika’.

Farts have a tendency to backfire, and that truism seems to apply to Antonikis more than most. What looked at first sight like a smart move (bash the Nazis) has predictably stirred the hornets’ nest bigtime.
