White House event honors Greek Independence Day – Obama chats with Varoufakis!

Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis held a 12-minute chat with US President Barack Obama on Thursday afternoon (EST) at the White House during the annual event honoring Greek Independence Day. US VP Joe Biden was also present at the event, as was Archbishop Demetrios of America and a delegation of Greek officials, including Attica regional government Rena Dourou.

A few photos of the event were posted on Twitter by Greek-American journalist Apostolis Zoupaniotis, with a couple of photos showing both Varoufakis and Obama conversing in an informal manner.

According to a dispatch from the state news agency in Greece, Obama and Varoufakis agreed that they can find practical ways to avoid destabilisation either by accident or because of uncontrolled processes. Moreover, both sides expressed the need for flexibility.

On his part, the US President expressed the support of himself and of his government and assured that the cooperation will continue.

Varoufakis said that the US President did not point his finger to us nor did he tell the Greek government what to do. He said that Greece must be absolutely committed to its goal and perfectly integrated in the process in which it participates with the IMF-ECB-EU, while he added that foreign forces ought to help.

Referring to the negotiations with the partners, Varoufakis underlined that there is never a key date, all things should be viewed in combination and cumulatively and added that on April 24 there will be no resolution, there will be progress.
"The question is what we will do in the post-June period. Our goal is a good deal for the post-June period, an agreement on a different concept from the previous ones, which extended the problem, the Finance Minister said stressing that the government will do everything possible in order to find a solution. March 25th parade to take place without railings

National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos told reporters that this year's much-awaited military parade to mark Greek Independence Day on March 25th will take place without railings and there are not going to be elevated platforms for prominent officials.

He said the parade will include two National Guard battalions from the border region of Evros and the Dodecanese Islands. He also noted that flights of Armed Forces aircraft and helicopters will be conducted (and will not burden the budget).

The Minister of Defence also revealed that he is going to visit the United States between March 27-April 3 in order to represent the Greek government at the Independence Day celebrations organized by the Greek Diaspora.

Obama thanks Archbishop Demetrios for support of civil rights

Archbishop Demetrios of America had a brief discussion with U.S. President Barack Obama in the margins of the events and the march held in Selma, Alabama last weekend to commemorate the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday". According to the Greek state news agency, the American president thanked the Archbishop for his presence and for the "struggle of the Greek Orthodox Church in support of civil rights."
"On this anniversary we commemorate the heroic faith and hope of those who struggled, of those who upheld human dignity through powerful yet peaceful protests and demonstrations against racism, prejudice, fear and hatred," the Archbishop said, adding that the city of Selma has become a symbol.
He also underlined that his predecessor, the late Archbishop Iakovos - a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights Movement - was the highest-ranking religious leader to march alongside Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma in 1965.

SYRIΖΑ Το Respect Energy & Defence Contracts Made Between Karamanlis & Putin

The Greek foreign ministry posted a photo of the meeting between Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday where geopolitics, energy and defence were the choice topics for discussion. The meeting in Moscow was initiated by Russia when Lavrov sent a telegram to Kotzias and the invitation came after the new Greek government spoke out against further anti-Russia sanctions. The topics of discussion included energy, Russia's assessment of the situation in Ukraine and possible ways to settle the conflict peacefully, cooperation in defence, transport and finance.

A report on the military news site defencenet claims that the Greek Foreign Minister assured his Russian counterpart that the government will observe all the agreements that were made by the former government under Costas Karamanlis, referring of course to the massive defense and energy deals that were made while the latter was in power between 2004-2009.

Lavrov's response was immediate: "We have kept our word, we welcome the government's decision to reactivate the agreements. We will prepare new agreements." At the same time, Lavrov said that Russia would examine a request for economic aid by Greece, if such a request was made.

Speaking at a joint news conference later on, Lavrov said Russia appreciated the "constructive" position of Greece in ties between Moscow and the European Union, which has imposed several waves of sanctions on Russia over Ukraine. The Russian FM said that the two ministers agreed that there could only be a political situation to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has killed more than 5,000 people.

On his part, Kotzias said he hoped there would be a "significant" agreement at talks in the Belarussian capital Minsk later on Wednesday and mentioned the issue of ethnic Greeks living in eastern Ukraine.

The minister said over 100,000 ethnic Greeks live in eastern Ukraine and he will make it a priority to give them assistance. "We have a special problem with Ukraine. As you know, in Mariupol and other parts of eastern Ukraine there are about 100,000 people of Greek origin and we are trying to do everything possible to help them," Kotzias said.

It should be reiterated that former premier Costas Karamanlis had signed intergovernmental agreements with Russia for the purchase of TDMA BMP-3 which will dramatically upgrade the capabilities of Greece's armed forces they protect personnel with immeasurable firepower.

Speaking about fire-power, Greek philosopher and historian Ilias Iliopoulos told RIA Novosti that Russian arms are more reliable and effective during crises since they cannot be switched off by manufacturers of weapons systems produced in the US and sold overseas. In the article he notes that Greece will only benefit from shunning US weapons in favor of more reliable Russian arms to allow the country to meet its national security needs.
"What should I think when buying US weapons if they can be switched off during crisis? This is a waste of money," Iliopoulos said.
"Think about Saddam Hussein, who bought French weapons, including air defense systems and radars. At the critical moment all that electronics was switched off remotely via a satellite," Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the Russian National Defense magazine, told Sputnik Turkey.
"Just like French weapons, US arms … can be remotely shut down. This is reality," he emphasized.
Although Greece's new government is mainly focused on finding a way to help the country’s ailing economy to recover, Yannis Mandalidis, editor-in-chief of the Lambrakis Press Group, told Sputnik Turkey that Athens is promoting greater cooperation with Russia.
"Greece’s new government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, will seek closer ties with Russia. Hence, military cooperation with Moscow will come to the fore in the future," he said.
"Greece will have an edge over its adversaries since they will not be familiar with Russian weapons," Mandalidis added.
(Editor's Note: Although HellasFrappe has rallied hard for Karamanlis, and everyone who regularly reads HellasFrappe knows that the editor of the blog is a HUGE fan of this former prime minister, we are somehow not convinced by SYRIZA's sudden love story with Russia. We cannot get the picture of Alexis Tsipras and some of George Papandreou's buddies at the Soros-backed Brookings Institute out of our minds. Certainly we applaud this development, if true, but we are not about to count our chickens before they hatch and recommend that our readers soak up all the information with a grain of salt as well. Why? Our instinct tells us that it is just a show... or dust in the eyes of all of those who are against Russia, meaning the US and the EU, so that Greece can have better ammo at the ongoing negotiations in Brussels. Besides, we believe that diplomacy that secures energy and defence deals is not really publicized on news sites and the social networks... We could be wrong, things are very hazy at the moment, but we will wait and see what happens. Stay tuned Frappers.)

Greek Call To End Violence in Ukraine - Protect Diaspora

Alternate Minister of Defence Kostas Isichos called for an immediate end to the "continuously escalating violence" in Ukraine, announcing that there are plans for Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias to visit Moscow, Kiev and possibly Mariupol, where the presence of Ukrainians of Greek origin is strong.

In an interview on ERT-OPEN radio on Saturday, he said that the Ukrainian government is held hostage by Euro-Atlantic rationales adding, however, that the Franco-German initiative can have positive aspects if military operations cease, even temporarily, particularly in the region around Mariupol where there are an estimated 100,000 Ukrainians of Greek origin.

Referring to the stepping up of EU sanctions on Russia which, in turn, responds with increased countermeasures against the EU, he said that it is an extremely dangerous path, adding that Greece supports efforts for rapprochement between the two sides.

Commenting on the relations between Turkey and Israel, he underlined that Greece should not only keep a balance but, at the same time, it should be a pillar of stability and peace for the two sides and the greater region.

On the relations between Greece and Cyprus, he said that very close cooperation between the two countries is emerging as regards their strategy aimed at disengaging or easing as much as possible the increased supervision sought by the partners, in order for both countries to be on an economic growth path. He clarified that there are big differences between the two countries, both economic and geopolitical, and as regards the agreements with the partners but despite this, the governments of Greece and Cyprus will cooperate closely on the level of summit meetings where they can join forces on many issues.

Referring to the fight against the jihadists and what Greece will do if the United States requested its assistance, he said that Greece will examine very carefully its role in the fight against the jihadists which is a necessary process by all countries. On the demands that could be made by the United States in the fight against the jihadists, he observed that "it is the international community, many countries, who are interested in fighting against this plague. Therefore, our cooperation with all the countries, in the West and in the East, against this threat is a very important factor."

HF Wants Frappers To Be Weary About #icannotvote Campaign

I recently came across a campaign by Greek expats in the EU who are  lobbying for their right to vote from abroad. The campaign runs under the #icannotvote. At first I was thrilled with the idea, but as I began to examine this initiative I became a little skeptical as to its intentions. But before I analyze that I just want to note that one of the first expats that began lobbying for this right was yours truly.

Anyone who has read the About Us section in HellasFrappe, or who has spoken with me directly on the social networks or on a political level knows very well that I have been lobbying for this for well over a decade. (And I have done so with ZERO funds, ZERO support and ZERO non-profits backing me up.) So now you can understand my excitement, but you will also comprehend why I am now questioning this particular initiative and want all of you to also be weary of it as well.

This particular group of expats rightfully says that their exclusion from the electoral process is a form of discrimination. However, after examining their site, and all the material that they have published, I am skeptical about this initiative because, as I discovered, they are only lobbying for the new waive of expats and especially for those who only live within the EU. Also, another thing that amazed me was that there is no mention in their material of Costas Karamanlis' initiative several years ago to give expats this right. Instead they endorse recent remarks from SYRIZA MEP Manolis Gletzos and allow it to be understood that this is a new initiative that the radical left party has devised.

I salute all initiatives that aim to reunite expats with the motherland, after all this blog's motto is "Hellenes united, never again divided",  but I warn Frappers not to get blinded by initiatives that omit to give credit where credit is due. Or to endorse an idea that simply repackages something, omits historic facts and presents it as new (for political purposes).

Here are the facts: During his term in government the former leader of the conservative New Democracy party Costas Karamanlis took action on this matter and his government tabled two historic bills in the Greek Parliament which would have given Greek expats the right to vote from abroad. The bills came after Karamanlis went on an official trip to Australia. While there the Greek community, which numbers in the hundreds of thousands, asked him to take action on this right and as soon as he returned he took action right away.

Unfortunately both times, the PASOK party (under George Papandreou), as well as other Leftist parties, blocked the bills.

The bills would have bypassed the Greek constitution -which does not permit expats to vote outside Greece- and allow expats to vote from their country of residence, but it needed 180 votes in order to be ratified. Much to Karamanlis' dismay, and to the disappointment of millions of expats abroad, the bills only had the support of the conservative New Democracy party because all the other parties in the Greek parliament were against it... this includes SYRIZA.

If those bills had passed, then expats would have been permitted to vote at their local embassies in their countries of residence through the process of electronic voting. The same process that is used by other western nations during any election process.

When the first bill was introduced, it was totally rejected by all the Left forces in Greece, and through the help (of what some say) of the Council of Hellenes Abroad or (SAE). So Karamanlis' team began redrafting the law and reintroduced a few months later only to be met with complete rejection again. The second bill would have also permitted expats to have legal representation in the Greek parliament (slightly different than the first) by electing their own MPs, but again it was slammed by all the left forces in Greece.

But don't take my word for it, I encourage you to do your own homework and look up the information for yourselves.

Another thing which bothered me while reading through their material has to do with who should be eligible to vote and who shouldn't. The material that they have produced to endorse this initiative only refers to fresh expats who recently immigrated to other EU nations. I truly hope that I misunderstood this (major) detail. If not then I am extremely insulted as a Greek-Canadian citizen. I want to to remind them that Greeks in Germany, Sweden and Spain, etc. (or in other EU nations) are not more Greek than Greeks in Australia, Canada or the US, etc.. They are just as Greek if not more!

Expats have every right to co-decide on the future of Greece, but not only one group of expats... ALL EXPATS.

I cannot support an initiative that excludes a huge number of expats, and find it rather suspicious that they only refer to one group. But again, I truly hope that I misunderstood this point.

An expat is anyone who was born in Greece, is of Greek decent and a Greek national. This means that Greeks in New York, Sydney, Montreal, Chicago, Tokyo, Johannesburg, etc. should also be allowed to vote. The right of expats to vote cannot be limited to people who simply live in the European Union and who recently immigrated abroad, because expats in other nations (especially in the Americas and Australia) have the same rights and have kept a duo-nationality for decades!

Besides, they are the best ambassadors of Greek culture that the Motherland can offer. They carry the torch of Greece in their countries of residence by educating their children the Greek language and teach them our vast history which is then passed on from generation to generation. Some also pay hefty taxes on properties in Greece which they maintain for sentimental purposes. They also support Greek exports and therefore contribute significantly to the Greek economy and finally many expats also send their sons to serve in the Greek military.

All expats... not just those in Sweden, Germany and other European nations... but all expats. This was obviously overlooked by the designers of this initiative and this explains why they only highlight Glezos' statements on this controversial issue and totally omit the historic fact that Karamanlis actually took action on this several years ago.

I propose that all expats get in tune with the facts. The initiative that is making strong waves on the web is nothing new... It is a democratic right that veteran expats such as myself have been vying for for years.

I salute this initiative, but will only support it if it edits its material and includes these facts and if it lobbies for all Greeks, not just for one set of Greeks.  I advise all HF readers to do the same.

I vowed to lobby for this right over a decade ago so that my aging parents, who were forced to leave Greece more than four decades ago, would one day have the right to vote for their beloved Greece. Till this day many aging Greeks abroad hear the word Greece and it still brings tears to their eyes. It is this very love and passion for the motherland that has been passed on to their children, and their children are already beginning to pass it on to the next generation. Their "καημο" or bitterness of being forgotten by the Motherland is strong, but their hearts are still forgiving and full of "φιλοτιμο". If the Motherland acknowledges them in this way... then all the pain and bitterness will be forgotten. I live for the day when our leaders finally realize how important this is for the future of Hellenism abroad and for the future of Hellas as a whole. In the meantime, I pledge to continue with this fight until I am vindicated; for my parents and for each and every one of us.

Ocena: A Greek Speaking Village in Turkey!

The following article by Vahit Tursun first appeared in the center-left Turkish newspaper Radikal on Sunday February 25 2007. The author, Vahit Tursun, is a grecophone from Ofi, Trebizond.

Ocena is a village near Turkey’s Black Sea coast, known to Greeks as the Pontus, in the mountains behind the town of Trebizond. It is in an idyllic setting of pine and fir trees near the mountain peaks, among valleys and crystal-clear springs.

The village’s original inhabitants were probably fugitives from Ottoman oppression who fled to the shelter of the wooded peaks. It is not known when they built the first houses that became a settlement. It seems that as soon as they built them, the Ottomans discovered them and demolished them.

According to Ottoman archives (the tax archive, or tahrir defterleri, of 1583) the community consisted of just five families. That was the last year the mountains were free. From then on they were included in the Ottoman Empire’s tax system.

Over the next few years more people moved to the village and the days of isolation were over. By 1613, the number of families had grown to 54, four of them declaring themselves Muslims.

According to G. Kandilaptis in his book “Ta Fitiana,” all the inhabitants of the Ofi area, to which Ocena belonged, converted to Islam by order of the region’s bishop. No one knows if they were asked to gather in one place or if someone went around announcing the decision to householders.

Everyone who reached Ocena from various other areas brought their own idiom with them, enriching the local dialect and resulting in a great variety of expressions in a village that did not have much contact with the coastal towns. Its inhabitants had links with the entire Pontus region, of which Ocena could be called a microcosm, an example of the East.

People in the village were not conscious of these differences; they did not consider themselves outsiders. Everyone was from somewhere else. Most importantly, they all spoke the same language, “Romeika,” or Pontic Greek.

Today the village is losing its inhabitants. Only a quarter of the population remains. Particularly in Kato Ocena, lights are turned on in only 200 of the 630 homes. Even these last few inhabitants are ready to leave the small village that is the last remnant of a civilization that is thousands of years old, taking with it everything that is different, every trace of its ancient cultural relics.

Every angry fugitive, every desperate emigrant who leaves his homeland means one more nail in the coffin of that civilization, leaving behind ignorance and inhumanity. Even the death of a single person weakens an ancient language, as that person takes with them all the words in his or her memory that are now rarely spoken because of the relentless onslaught of capitalism, the media, indifference, the worship of all things foreign, and of betrayal.

Ocena is dying a slow death, and with it an age-old idiom of the Greek language, in full sight of a world that believes itself to be civilized. In the large towns, no one can speak their native tongue, much as they love hearing it.

Greek-speaking Muslims in Turkey

One of the most interesting phenomena in modern Turkey is the existence of Greek-speaking Muslims.

The traditional Greek-Turkish conflict, Turkey’s authoritarian administration, the Kurdish uprising and the survival of stereotypes surrounding the formation of newer nations in the region have made studying this particular ethnic group difficult.

The way Greek-speaking groups passed from Christianity to Islam during Ottoman rule is unknown to modern Greek scholars.

Today there are four main grecophone groups in Turkey: the Cretans, Pontics, Macedonians and Cypriots. Each of them is of extreme historic interest. The way these groups express themselves is of great importance as it reveals an unknown aspect of modern Turkish society that is becoming more and more important.

The public appearance of these groups is not only of interest to Turkish society, which is slowly becoming aware of its multicultural nature, but also to Greek society. These groups illuminate how modern nation-states in the region were formed and the way groups caught in the middle – created by history – were forced to be incorporated into the ideological foundation and the religious doctrine of the particular state they were living in.

Greece presents its energy policy to US officials

Speaking to US officials late on Monday, at the  Centre of Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Greece's Minister of Energy Yiannis Maniatis said that Greece is a reliable partner of increasingly importance and impact in a turbulent region, where peace, stability and welfare are in danger, The Greek Minister, who is presently in the US following an invitation of his American counterpart Dr Ernest Moniz, presented the US officials with Greece's energy policy. In doing so, he underlined that Greece's "leading role" in Europe's energy security, which is an "issue of priority of the international energy diplomacy", which focuses on three main directions:

  • - Greece serves as a reliable partner of increasingly importance and impact in a turbulent region, where peace, stability and welfare are in danger,
  • - Greece is developing its endogenous sources, which render it a new potential oil and natural gas supplier in the European market,
  • - Greece is becoming a strong energy transit hub (natural gas terminals, gas pipelines and electricity), offering new alternatives for energy supply in Europe

Maniatis, according to a dispatch from the state news agency, put special emphasis on Greece's "new energy role" as a natural gas "gateway" in South Eastern Europe, particularly after the creation of the Greek-Bulgarian corridor and the expansion of respective connections to Romania and Hungary. He also stressed the importance of the East Med pipeline to transport natural gas from the southeastern Mediterranean deposits to European consumers.

After referring to the "recent achievements" of the Greek economy, he presented the Greek research and hydrocarbon exploitation programme in the sea area of the Ionian Sea and south of Crete while analyzing the new opportunities to attract international investments along with the extremely positive outlook in the sector.

Maniatis strongly condemned "Turkey's recent provocative and illegal under international law actions" and reiterated the "clear positions" of the European Council to respect the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, within its own Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Regarding developments in the financial sector, he said that 2014 is the year that Greece "is exiting the crisis" and after six years of recession, the Greek economy "returned to growth," adding, among others, that "we achieved a primary budget surplus earlier than expected and above expectations," and that "during the past three years, we have achieved the largest fiscal adjustment also earlier than expected along with major structural reforms."

Greece, he said, is moving steadily in the direction of "developing synergies" between the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean, including Israel, Egypt and Cyprus, aiming at establishing peace, security and regional cooperation.

On Tuesday, Maniatis would meet with US Secretary of Energy Dr Ernest Moniz, the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Catherine Novelli, and representatives of oil companies as well as with Michelle Patron, US President Barack Obama's special adviser and director on Energy and Climate at the National Security Council (NSC).

On Wednesday, the minister will visit New York where he will speak at a discussion titled: "The Eastern Mediterranean and European Energy Landscape: Trends and Opportunities" at the University of Columbia. In New York, he will also meet with Archbishop Demetrios of America.

Greek American Busted For Multi-Million Dollar Scam

Pretending to be a representative of a fund located in Luxembourg, the man from Larisa, along with his co-conspirators siphoned off more than $7 million!

On September 9, in Boston, Massachusetts, Evripides Georgiadis, of Larisa, Greece, was sentenced to 102 months in prison and ordered to pay $8.4 million in restitution.

In May 2014, Georgiadis was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 11 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to court documents, between 2007 and 2011,

Georgiadis participated in a conspiracy to defraud developers who were seeking financing for large-scale alternative energy and commercial projects by pretending to be a representative of a multi-billion dollar fund located in Luxembourg.

Georgiadis and his co-conspirators convinced developers to give deposits between $300,000 and $1 million to this fraudulent fund with the promise that the deposit would be fully refundable. Georgiadis and his co-conspirators spent and transferred the developers' deposit money out of the country, and the fraudulent fund never financed any projects.

Over $7 million was stolen from victims, including $600,000 which had originally been provided by a financial adviser, Sean Mansfield. Mansfield, in turn, had stolen the funds from his clients. In 2011, Mansfield was sentenced to 60 months in prison for defrauding his clients.

Georgiadis’s co-defendants, John Condo, Frank Barecich, and Michael Zanetti, have all been sentenced to prison. Condo and Barecich were sentenced to 90 months and 12 months in prison, respectively. Zanetti was sentenced to 37 months in prison.

US Congressman's Historic Speech on OXI Day - THIS IS A MUST READ

The following report is a re-publication of a speech that was given by the Honorable Micheal Bilirakis of Florida in the US Congress on Friday, October 28, 2005.  Mr. Bilirakis words represent the Diaspora HellasFrappe has been lobbying for and the Diaspora that makes everyone of Hellenic background proud. We thank you Sir.

The full text of Congressman Bilirakis’ remarks follow:
Mr. Speaker, I rise proudly to celebrate “oxi” day. The historical significance of this day and what it meant to the outcome of World War II cannot be overstated. The outcome of a decision made on a day in 1940, had a profound impact on the conducting of the war by Nazi Germany. We’re talking about a stand made by a small, battered and courageous nation, namely Greece, against the larger, more powerful aggressors Italy and Germany.
By October of 1940, World War II had begun, and the Nazi war machine was already in high gear. Along with Hitler’s ally, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, the German and Italian forces were threatening the whole of Europe. European nations were bowing to tyranny and destruction as the Germans and the Italians marched through Europe.
Great Britain endured Germany’s aerial bombardment, forcing Hitler to seek another avenue to subdue the British. Hitler intended to eliminate British operations in the Mediterranean in order to weaken their ability to deter German advances.
To achieve this, Hitler needed the Axis powers to strike at British forces in Greece. By conquering Greece, Hitler would gain access to an important connecting link with Italian bases in the Dodecanese islands. This would give the Italians a strangle hold on British positions in Egypt, where British forces were already facing attack from the Italian army in north Africa. The British considered the defense of Egypt vital to allied positions in the oil rich Middle East.
On October 28, 1940, the Italian Ambassador in Athens presented an insulting ultimatum to Greek Prime Minister Metaxas, demanding the unconditional surrender of Greece or Italy would declare war and invade Greece. Mussolini had given the Greek Prime Minister Metaxas three hours to reply.
Ioannis MetaxasPrime Minister Metaxas responded with the now historic word “oxi”, which means “no” in Greek. His statement embodied the true spirit of the Greek people. His words of defiance echoed the same devotion and love of country that Greek patriots exhibited during their war of independence against the Ottoman empire when they shouted the defiant words “liberty or death.” Prime Minister Metaxas’ actions marked the beginning of one of the world’s most heroic efforts against tyranny and oppression. Italy then invaded.
It is important to note that in addition to Greece having a population seven times smaller than Italy, the disparity in their armed forces was even greater: Italy had close to ten times the firepower of Greece in its army and navy and seven times the troops. Italy’s large air force had total air superiority since Greece had a very small defensive air force. However, despite their lack of equipment, the Greek army proved to be well-trained and resourceful. Within a week of the invasion, it was clear that Italian forces were suffering serious setbacks despite having control of the air and fielding superior armored vehicles.
On November 14th, the Greek army launched a counter-offensive and quickly drove the Italian forces back into Albania. By the next month, the Greeks had captured the town of Pogradec in eastern Albania. The fighting continued for a few more months…it was clear that the Greeks were not going to stand for defeat. In a last ditch effort to bring the war to a close before the Italians would be forced to ask Hitler to intervene, they launched another assault on March 12, 1941. After six days of fighting, the Italians had made only insignificant gains, and it became clear that German intervention was necessary.
German-Bombing-of-Piraeus-in-GreeceOn April 6, 1941, Hitler ordered the German invasion of Greece. It took the Germans five weeks to finally end the conflict. This delay proved to be critical to the outcome of the war. Italy’s inability to capture Greece enabled the British to win major victories against Mussolini’s forces in north Africa. This solidified British positions in the region as well as in Cyprus. In addition, it contributed to the failure of the German Barbarossa campaign to conquer Russia.
Due to Mussolini’s humiliating defeat by the Greeks in Albania and Greece, Hitler was compelled to capture the Balkans, mainly Yugoslavia and Greece, thus, delaying his Barbarossa plan to invade and capture the Soviet Union before the winter of 1941. The Greek resistance, both in Albania, and in the other famous battle in Crete, altered, favorably for the allies, his Barbarossa time table by at least six months.
Perhaps most importantly, the Germans never gained the advantage against the British. Although Germany had conquered much of Europe, its inability to decimate British and Russian forces early in the war would eventually prove to be fatal. Thanks to the heroic Greek resistance and their countless sacrifices, the war tide had been permanently changed for Hitler due to the delay of this critical time table.
Nearly one million Hellenes died during that time. That was 14% of the population in 1940. That is equivalent to losing 39 million people in this country TODAY in the case of a war to defend our country.
The entire Western world, discouraged and fearful of the Axis powers and the growing ugly war, took hope from these incredible victories. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said of the Greeks: “Today we say that Greeks fight like heroes, from now on we will say that heroes fight like Greeks.”
A very small number of those Greeks who fought like heroes are still alive today – some now are American citizens. One of those heroes lives in my congressional district – Mr. Demetrios Palaskas who, along with others, has shared those traumatic stories of the mountain fighting by the rag-tag Greeks against such a powerfully equipped invader. We all salute you Mr. Palaskas – you and your many fellow heroes for helping to keep the world free.
Mr. Speaker, “oxi” day is an inspiration to all those who cherish democracy and freedom. It marks defiance against terrible odds. As an American of Greek descent, I am proud to honor the memory of those brave patriots who fought for freedom for themselves and ultimately for all the free world on this important day.

Deputy FM inaugurates new Greek school “Athena,” in Bucharest

Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos inaugurated the new building of the Greek school “Athena” (K-9) in Bucharest earlier this week, within the framework of his two-day visit to Romania. Afterwards, having toured the classrooms and other spaces of the new facilities, he met with the teachers and the members of the parent-teacher association. He congratulated them on their efforts and listened to their requests and the problems they raised.

Speaking to the pupils, Mr. Gerontopoulos stressed that the new school complex that embraces a special generation of Greek students, who, despite growing up far from the homeland, will, thanks to the efforts of their parents and teachers, remain close to the Greek spirit and the Greek language.

Later, Gerontopoulos visited the offices of the Hellenic Union of Romania, meeting with the Union’s President, Romanian MP Dragos Zisopoulo, as well as with the board of the Greek Community of Bucharest. He was briefed on their various activities, which concern the teaching of the Greek language and traditional Greek dances, the hosting of an annual Greek Language Olympiad, the publication of various books in Greek and Romanian, and efforts that have begun for the construction of the Greek church in Drăgășani, where the Sacred Band monument is located.

PROVOCATION: Greece Slams Attack by Albanian Ultranationalists on Minority Greeks

Greece’s Ambassador to Tirana sent a demarche to the Albanian Foreign Ministry, asking that Albanian authorities condemn the incidents that unfolded in Dervitsani (which is predominantly populated by a strong Greek minority). The violent incidents in Dervitsani occurred after the recent football match between Serbia and Albania, which ended prematurely when clashes broke out between players and fans when a flag of “Greater Albania” appeared in the stadium.

The ultranationalists apparently terrorized villagers, torched their cars and smashed storefronts, while they threatened that they would burn all the "Christians”.

The Greek-language media in Albania said that those responsible for the attack were from Lazarati village. In fact Himara.gr reported that some villagers were wounded, others fired warning shots in the air and the church bells tolled in alarm as the intruders wreaked havoc.

The Greek Ambassador also requested that all the necessary measures be taken to find, arrest and bring all those who carried out the attack to justice, while he noted that measures should be adopted in order to protect the Greek minority (especially ahead of the October 28th national celebration).

Finally, Rokanas conveyed Greece’s concern at similar attacks that he said target the Greek minority, and thus pose an obstacle to Albania’s European perspective.

Saint Nicholas Church at WTC Will Finally Be Rebuilt

The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when it was crushed under the falling Twin Towers, is finally going to be rebuilt. A ground blessing ceremony is scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 18th.

The small Greek Orthodox Church was established in 1916. Because it was the only house of worship that was destroyed on September 11th, 2001, the new design will also include a National Shrine close by overlooking the 9/11 Memorial.

In fact the new design, by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, will have a modern Byzantine style, including a dome but will at the same time fit in with the steel and glass structures of the surrounding area. The upper floors will also include a non-denominational bereavement space that will be open to all.

The Archbishop of America Demetrios is expected to preside at the ground blessing ceremony with the participation of the hierarchies of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Ukrainians of Greek Descent Die In Mortar Attack Near Mariupol

HellasFrappe is in dismay over the reports of a bloody killing of several Diaspora Greeks who died in a mortar attack near the town of Mariupol in Ukraine. During the Ukrainian West-East conflict the Diaspora in this area was pretty safe but they too have now begun to suffer their first losses. The ongoing civil conflict between government forces and pro-Russian rebels has claimed the lives of thousands of people in recent months.

According to press reports, the village of Sartan, which is located in the Donetsk region, and which is predominantly populated by people of Greek descent, was attacked with mortar rounds, earlier this week. The incident killed seven people and wounded 17 others.

The village is located 10 kilometers away from Mariupol.

The Greek consul in Mariupol Dimitris Papadimitriou stated that there were Greeks amongst the dead, but was unable to confirm the number.

He told the Ta Nea newspaper that until now there had been no tension witnessed in these areas, despite the fact that the village is near the frontline. (Of course that was then, and this is now.)

Greeks Fight Alongside Ukraine's Donetsk People’s Republic

Volunteers from Greece are among the representatives of various nationalities in the ranks of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) indepedence forces, the Athens Courier newspaper reported. According to the newspaper, there is a large community of Greeks in the east of Ukraine, who have suffered as much as other residents of the region and many of them fled for Russia’s Rostov and Kuban regions.
“Pontic Greeks, who live in Greece, should be concerned with the fate of the Greeks living in Mariupol, which is trapped under the shelling [and other firing] of the Kiev-Lviv punishers,” the paper reported.
It is also noted in the paper that apart from Greeks, two battalions of Serbs and even 25 US citizens are fighting for “traditional human values” alongside militia in southeast Ukraine.

According to earlier reports, within the Vostok Battalion, DPR’s most prominent defense force, are volunteers from Spain, Italy, France, Spain, Canada, Russia and Poland.

The former DPR Prime Minister Alexander Borodai stated on his Facebook webpage that volunteers are especially needed to help residents and for the restoration of infrastructure in the region.

Since mid-April the Ukrainian government has been conducting a military operation in the east of Ukraine to suppress independence supporters who refused to acknowledge the new government that came to power after a coup that took place in Ukraine on February 22.

Thousands of civilians have died as a result of the confrontation. Moscow has repeatedly condemned the operation and urged for a ceasefire to prevent further casualties, sending a humanitarian convoy to war-torn eastern Ukraine, delivering about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid.

Have you called your US Congressman in the name of Greek Human Rights?

US Congress
US Congress (credit: jessie owen)
Recently, Operation Antioch asked all Greek-Americans to take 5 minutes from their busy lives and call their Congressmen, in order to prevent the United States from sending $500 million in aid to the so-called “moderate” Syrian Opposition. The current American policy of aiding terrorists in the hopes of forcing regime change in Syria has backfired. Instead, it has led to the rise of a radical Islamic Caliphate, which now threatens all the sacrifices made by the young men and women of the United States military in neighboring Iraq.

As Greek-Americans, we have a direct connection to this conflict, even if we do not realize it. The second largest ethno-religious minority, behind the Kurds of Syria, are ethnic Greeks; the Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic Christian minority. Commonly referred to as ‘Roum,' they make up the last remnant of Hellenism in this part of the world. Once Greek-speaking, these now Arabic-speaking Roum are the often forgotten Antiochian Greeks of the Levant.

These Antiochian Greeks, alongside ethnic Armenians, Assyrians, and Alawites have been targeted for extermination by radical Islamic jihadists inside the Syrian Opposition. Extremists who have even dared to threaten to take their war to Greece and Cyprus*. As Greek-Americans, the duty falls upon us to prevent the arming of these forces, which mean to murder our ethnic kin, and conquer our homeland. Please take five minutes of your time to call your Congressional Rep, and urge them to say NO to sending aid, of any kind, to the Syrian Opposition.

Follow the link below to find your congressional contact info - http://www.house.gov/representatives/

Below you will find an example script you could use if calling your Congressional Rep.

EXAMPLE SCRIPT FOR PHONE CALL

Hello, my name is __________ and I'm calling you from __________ (city or town).

I’d like to voice my concern towards President Obama's proposal to send $500 million in aid to so-called moderate rebels in Syria. To send aid to any Syrian opposition group would be a mistake, and most likely result in further arms falling in the hands of radical extremists. The United States cannot afford to keep suffering blowback from an ill-advised foreign policy. As a Greek-American, I am directly concerned for the well-being of the Antiochian Greek Christians who are being exterminated, alongside Armenians and Assyrians, at the hands of the Syrian Opposition. How many innocent Christians must continue to perish until our government realizes that regime change in Syria, is not a smart policy? Please tell the (Congressman/Congresswoman) to stand against sending aid to Rebels in Syria.

Thank you for your time

The Truth Is Finally Revealed: The Genocide of the Pontic Greeks

The following article aims to summarize the tragic end of the Pontic Greek civilization in northern Turkey—a series of events less researched and documented than the Armenian Genocide, but equally denied and covered up by the Turkish state.

By Raffi Bedrosyan (Armenian Weekly) -  The annihilation of the non-Turk/non-Muslim peoples from Anatolia started on April 24, 1915, with the arrest of 250 Armenian intellectuals in Constantinopole. Within a few months, 1.5 million Armenians had been wiped out from their historic homeland of 4,000 years in what is now eastern Turkey, as well as from the northern, southern, central, and western parts of Turkey. About 250,000 Assyrians were also massacred in southeastern Turkey during the same period. Then, it was the Pontic Greeks’ turn to be eliminated from northern Turkey on the Black Sea coast, sporadically from 1916 onward. The ethnic cleansing of the Pontic Greeks got interrupted when the Ottomans ended up on the losing side of World War I, but their real destruction resumed in a well-organized manner on May 19, 1919.

Pontic Greeks continuously inhabited the southern coast of the Black Sea in northern Anatolia since pre-Byzantine times. The ethnic cleansing of the Pontic Greeks followed the same pattern as the Armenian deportations and massacres: Citing security threats and suspicions of possible cooperation with the Russians, in the spring of 1916 the Ottoman government ordered that all Pontic Greeks be removed from the Black Sea coastal towns to 50 kilometers inland.

Of course, in the case of the Armenians, the deportation orders were not only in the eastern war zone, but applied to every region in Turkey.
The Pontic Greek deportations were carried out by the Special Organization (Teskilat-i Mahsusa), the same governmental organization that carried out the Armenian massacres, manned by convicted killers released from prisons. Documents show that the longer the prison term, the higher the rank given by the government for these criminals in carrying out their destructive tasks.

Naturally, the Greek deportations soon transformed from relocation to robbery to mass murders. But because the Pontic Greeks had observed the fate of the Armenians, they got their defenses organized and resisted the deportations by taking to the mountains wherever they could.

As a result, the deportations and massacres in this “First Phase Massacre” resulted only in 150,000 deaths, eliminating a third of the Pontic population until the end of the war.

The “Second and Real Phase of Massacre” that saw the organized destruction of the Pontic Greeks started in earnest with the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Samsun on May 19, 1919. He met with the well-known mass murderers of the Armenians of the Black Sea region, such as Topal (Lame) Osman and Ipsiz Recep, and secured their cooperation in starting a terror campaign to get rid of the Pontic Greeks from northern Turkey.

These two murderers, originally smugglers of illegal goods, had gained notoriety in 1915 when they rounded up Armenian men, women, and children in large boats, took them out to sea, and dumped them overboard to drown, then boasted that the “smelt season will be bountiful this year with lots of food for them.”

As the Pontic Greek men had taken to the mountains, these two murderers went after the Greek women and children who had remained in the villages.

Various methods of mass murder were implemented. It was common to take the entire population of villages to caves nearby, seal the entrance of the cave, and burn them alive, or use gas to suffocate them inside. Any male Greeks caught were thrown, alive, into the coal furnaces of steamships through the funnels.

Churches became incinerators to burn alive as many Greeks as could be stuffed into the building. The extent of the tortures and massacres the Greeks endured even disturbed the local Muslim population, who petitioned the Ankara government to remove these murderers from the region.

Eventually Ataturk brought them to Ankara, where Osman became his personal bodyguard. Yet, when Osman shot a member of parliament for criticizing Ataturk, and then threatened Ataturk himself, he was executed.

There were also the so-called “Liberation Courts” (Istiklal Mahkemeleri) set up in cities across the Black Sea region to try Greek rebels.

These courts passed arbitrary decisions that almost invariably resulted in death sentences, with no defense or appeals allowed, and hangings carried out immediately.

Among the victims of these courts were hundreds of Greek teachers in the American and Greek schools of the region, prominent community leaders, clergymen, and, tragically, entire members of the Merzifon Greek high school football team, only because the team was named Pontus Club, which was deemed sufficient reason to label them a rebel terrorist organization.

Ataturk then appointed Nurettin Pasha as commander of the Central Army to mop up any resisting Greeks from the entire Black Sea region. This man, also known for his sadistic tendencies, destroyed thousands of defenseless Greek villages. Among his “accomplishments” was the arrest of a Turkish opposition journalist who had criticized Ataturk; Nurettin Pasha then had his soldiers tear the journalist alive limb by limb. He was also at the head of the army units that entered Izmir (Smyrna) in 1922, where he arranged for the lynching of the Greek head of the clergy in the same manner, and then began the Great Fire that destroyed the entire city.

Between May 19, 1919, and the end of 1922, the Pontic Greek population was decimated by 353,000 in the following cities:

  • Amasya, Giresun, Samsun: 134,078
  • Tokat: 64,582
  • Trabzon: 38,434
  • Niksar: 27,216
  • Sebinkarahisar: 21,448
  • Macka: 17,479

There was also a violent campaign to Islamize the Greeks; quite a number of them converted to Islam under threats and torture, followed by Turkification. With the 1924 Lausanne Treaty, the few remaining Pontic Greeks were included in the 1,250,000 Anatolian Greeks “exchanged” for Muslims in Greece, thereby completely emptying the Black Sea region from its historic Greek civilization.

All the names of the Greek villages and towns were changed into new Turkish names. Turkish language was forced upon all the converted Greeks, Hamshen Armenians, Laz, and Georgian minorities.
And thus began a century-long brainwashing campaign of single-state, single-nation, single language, single-language policy.

The May 19, 1919 date of Ataturk’s arrival in Samsun as a national holiday celebrating Youth and Sports Day was adopted in 1937, copying the German Nazis’ superior race policies, to demonstrate the athleticism and beauty of the Turkish race.

The extent of racism was evident in the statement of then-Justice Minister Mahmut Esat Bozkurt, who said, “Turks are the masters in this country. The remaining peoples have only one right in this country, to be the maids and slaves of the real Turks.”

As recently as in 2008, then-Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul echoed the same racist sentiments in Turkey:
“If the Greeks had been allowed to exist in the Aegean and Black Sea regions, and the Armenians all over Anatolia, would we be able to have a powerful national state today?”
The chief murderer of the Pontic Greeks, Topal (Lame) Osman, is still regarded as a hero by nationalist Turks. His statue was recently erected in Giresun by one of the Eregenekon deep-state leaders, retired general Veli Kucuk, himself responsible for the “mysterious disappearance” of dozens of Kurds, and the assumed mastermind behind the organized assassination of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.

Kucuk was arrested and sentenced to life in prison for plotting the overthrow of the Erdogan government as part of the deep-state trials, but was recently released from prison by Erdogan (following the falling out between Erdogan and the religious leader Fethullah Gulen, whose followers were among the prosecutor team and police forces who had arrested Kucuk).

It has now become clear that the Turkish state’s policy to create a single nationalist state with a single religion and language has failed miserably.

Within Turkey, Kurds could not be assimilated, and the grandchildren of the hidden Islamized Armenians and Pontic Greeks are starting to “come out” to find their roots.

Outside Turkey, the Armenians continue to demand justice and restitution for the 1915 genocide.

Assyrians have also started to get organized in various European states to demand their rights.

In 1994, the Greek Parliament recognized the Pontic Greek Genocide on the 75th anniversary of the 1919 events.

There is now a vast body of common knowledge regarding the true facts of the genocidal events that took place in Turkey from 1915 to 1923, and they can no longer be covered up by the denialist policies of the Turkish state.

Concern For Future Of Greek Orthodox Church of America - Who Ought to be the Next Archbishop?

The following opinion piece was published on mignatiou from Mr. Efsthatios Valiotis who holds a degree in theology and is a well known business leader that lives and works in the New York Metropolitan area. Mr. Valiotis says he sees a new period of tribulations ahead for the Greek Orthodox Church in America with unpredictable consequences in store for its unity and future. This is a MUST READ!

NEW YORK – I foresee a new period of tribulations ahead for the Greek Orthodox Church in America with unpredictable consequences in store for its unity and future, if the Ecumenical Patriarchate does not show some serious decision making. I am alluding to the fact that, sooner or later, Archbishop Demetrios’ tenure will come to an end. Notwithstanding his tireless ministry, he did turn 86 this past February.

It appears as if the Phanar has already started giving initial thought to the scenarios surrounding his successor. Some people are already making haste to ensure that this day will not be too far off, as was the case with the ever-memorable Archbishop Iakovos. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has no leeway left for experimentation and erroneous choices. It has come to a major crossroad in its history.

The Archbishop’s role is critical. Although now is not the time to examine the historical reasons behind this, the Church in America takes on more than just a spiritual role – it also exercises leadership over an entire ethnic group. Therefore, the question of the election/appointment of the next Archbishop of America concerns us all, regardless of whether or not we are members of a parish community, actively involved in community affairs, or indifferent to ecclesiastical affairs.

For example, there is the fact that the Archbishop represents the Greek American Community at the White House during the annual celebration of Greek Independence. At the same time, we are aware of the Church canons and traditions in choosing the head of the Church in America. We are under the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s jurisdiction, and we believe in this institution and its mission. We do not want the Church in America to break away from the Patriarchate because of disagreement. These positions are clear.

However, we ask that this time around, the Ecumenical Patriarchate – and specifically, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew – give a great deal of consideration to the concerns and wishes of the Greek American Community, and not repeat the mistake of 1996. The election/appointment of a new Archbishop – when that time arrives – must be based on the realities, needs, and prospects of the Greek American Community.

The first question that must be answered involves the qualities that the prelate who will succeed the present-day Archbishop ought to possess. Integrity, ecclesiastical ethos, spirituality, and theological knowledge constitute the primary elements in choosing a successor, which ought to be accompanied by lengthy experience ministering to the Greek American Community. In other words, he should be a resident of the United States and come from the clergy of the Greek Orthodox Church in America. This position is clear and I believe that it expresses the wishes of the majority of Greek Americans.

The second question involves the prelate who ought to be named Archbishop Demetrios’ successor. There might be some subjectivity present here, but in order for an argument to be convincing, it must be based on the facts relative to this archbishopric, the candidates’ capabilities and personality, as well as the pastoral ministry he has exhibited up until today. In other words, the qualities that would enable him to become our leader.

I would hope that the rationale behind this article is evident – especially to those in the know. I do not want to touch on the consequences that would follow in the event that the Ecumenical Patriarchate chooses not to hearken to the thoughts and concerns that are prevalent in the Greek American Community, this time around either.

I will limit myself to quoting the well known ancient Greek axiom: “the wise man doesn’t make the same mistake twice.” As for making the same mistake a third time… well, that would prove most dangerous…
