Scanning the Internet for an interesting offbeat story we stumbled on this one. It is actually a little horrific, but at the same time we actually said "yioupiiii" and sighed with relief. (Sorry... but its true)
According to an article in the Patras daily "Allagi" members of the GD party attacked a doctor at the Hospital of Rio who had the audacity to ask a very sick patient for a "fakelaki" so that he would perform his duties! The incident, according to the article, occurred three days ago and a vocal complaint was made immediately to both the management of the Hospital and the 6th Health District.
According to the publication, the relatives of the patient were annoyed and insulted by the coercive behavior of the doctor. They wanted help and skipped turning to the hospital management or the police in fear that their case would be placed on the back burner and they instead called on the "Golden Dawn" party for help. Almost immediately members of Golden Dawn flooded the Doctor's office and he was attacked. They left undisturbed after the incident. (Reference in Greek - Taxalia)
Editor's Note - No we do not agree with violence... but we cannot hide our satisfaction knowing that the little guy struck a blow to the corrupt State system. The focus should not be on whether the Golden Dawn party has bullies amongst its ranks, which it might, but rather that our brothel of a public sector continues to thrive even in a cash-strapped Greece! Especially State doctors. They continue to ask -or rather demand- for an envelope -or fakelaki- every time we need their services without one ounce of remorse. To them this is a given. We actually smiled when we read this story... and no... we did not pity the doctor at all. In fact we bet our bottom dollar that this particular doctor will never ask for a fakelaki again! LOL...
Former Prime Minister George Papandreou has been doing some Greek island hopping and, as expected, he still thinks he is royalty. Last week he wanted to travel by flying dolphin to the Greek islands without paying for his ticket, but the captain bravely said no. And guess what? The captain lost his JOB!
According to an article in Patmos Times the event took place on the island of Samos and specifically on the “Flying Dolphin Erato” which was ready for departure for the route Samos, Patmos, Leros, Kos when a car suddenly stopped and two men walked out, announcing that two more passengers wanted to get on board for the island of Patmos. The two passengers of course were none other than Geroge Papandreou and his wife. But surprise surprise they had no tickets so the captain did what he was instructed to do and told them that passengers without tickets cannot be accepted on board and that they were on a tight schedule and had to leave. Good old George insisted, even if this meant that they had no tickets (in other words he wanted to travel for free) so the captain simply sailed off leaving behind poor Papandreou at the docks with a dumbfounded look on his face, luggage and all!
When the ferry arrived at its last destination on the island of Kos, the company quickly briefed the captain that he had lost his job and they had already hired a new captain. In other words, the poor man was FIRED. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the poor man was sacked because he refused to allow Papandreou on board for a free ride. You see, the former PM still gallivants across the world thinking that he is royalty and for some strange reason he and other members of his family still expect people to bow to them.
The news went viral on the Internet, and totally ridiculed Papandreou who can afford to pay for a haircut in the northern Greek suburbs that costs more than an average monthly salary, but refuses to pay for a speed boat ticket because he is simply "Papandreou".
In fact the news has just given Greek citizens one more reason to shake their heads in disgust over the actions of the former PM and the political elite as a whole who truly think, act and believe that they are above and beyond the average Greek citizen. So much so that over the past few days the former captain decided to change his story (obviously because it was too degrading for Papandreou) and he is now saying that he resigned voluntarily.

It’s no secret that the Greek island of Mykonos attracts worldwide jet-setters and rich celebrities during the summer, many of which have expensive habits. With 120,000 euros that the Armand De Brignac Methouselah Midas bottle costs somebody could easily buy an apartment in many areas of Greece and the world. In other countries the most expensive price for the same bottle was found in Miami where it was sold for 120,000 US dollars.
Since the beginning of the summer season nobody has dared to consume the most expensive champagne bottle in Greece; however, it is rumored that this past week a rich Arab ordered the bottle which had been kept in a locker at the Nammos bar.
The incredible price of 120,000 euros for a champagne bottle is a great example of the financial and social differences in Greece, the crisis-hit country where many people live with a minimum wage which was recently lowered to under 586 euros per month.
“Taking a look at the menu of Nammos our eyes popped when we reached the champagne page. We saw bottles that go for 72,000 and even 120,000 euros. We can’t believe that somebody would spend this amount on a champagne bottle, especially now,” says a Greek beach-goer who was enjoying a coffee on the famous sun-beds of Nammos. Rumors have it that some of these sun-beds to be rented out to rich clients for the whole summer are priced at 2,000 – 3,000 euros per month.(islandnews)

It looks like Greece's largest maximum security prison is not going to get the chance to keep its waterfall-adorned, and BBQ-equipped pool. The Justice Ministry ordered the destruction of the 7.4-meter (24-foot) long pool which was constructed in the yard of Korydallos prison's psychiatric wing, claiming that the structure was built without permission and most importantly does not comply with health and safety standards.
The pool's existence at the jail near Athens was reported by the Sunday edition of the Proto Thema newspaper. The ministry said the structure, reportedly built last year, includes a small rock waterfall and a poolside barbecue installation.
Greece's Prison Officers Association said the pool was built using money the group raised and was restricted to staff and inmates at the psychiatric wing. Korydallos houses some 2,300 inmates, with about 300 receiving some form of psychiatric care.
The association expressed disappointment over the order to destroy the pool, which it called part of an attempt «to change things for the better — viewing inmates at those facilities as human beings and not numbers."
Overcrowding at Greek prisons has worsened since the start of the country's major financial crisis in late 2009, according to the Justice Ministry and the prison officers association, due to a spike in violent crime and prosecutions for tax-related offenses.
An interesting, tacky and downright ridiculous offbeat news story made headlines this weekend in the Proto Thema newspaper. Why bother with a prison break if Greek prisoners can live in luxury, bask in the sun, and cook up a couple of ribs all in the comfort of the prison grounds in Korydallos? Well now they can, since the staff at Korydallos prison built a swimming pool, a garden, a little zoo farm and a BBQ (?), Proto Thema said that the pool is really a reservoir of water for the animals, but then again its 4 meters wide and 8 meters long (so we don't know if we really believe that)! And what's more, along the side of the pool a stone BBQ has been erected (so that the prison guards can enjoy Tsiknopempti and other such holidays)! Immortal Greek spirit indeed... but if taxpayers money is being spent on guards who BBQ... then hese mesa!
In our quest to find an offbeat story to add to the column this week, we came across this next story from Thessaloniki and as tragically hysterical as it sounds, it is also alarming since the women who fall victim to this type of brainwashing and manipulation actually believe it and live through terrible ordeals.
Thessaloniki authorities issued several arrest warrants against a ring of pimps who were threatening Nigerian women that they would perform "voodoo" on them unless they worked as prostitutes. Four Nigerian men and two Greek nationals are now charged as being members of the ring.
Authorities cracked down on the ring, after a 23-year-old Nigerian woman found the courage to speak to a friend of hers,
and then report the case to the police.
Reports said her ordeal began in February 2010 when a woman
from her country, aged 31, persuaded her to illegally immigrate to Greece. The older woman apparently threatened that she would exercise voodoo on the 23-year old and her family if she did not work as a prostitute and so initially the young solicited sex in a bar in
the city of Arta and then in apartments in Athens and Thessaloniki until she decided to report the case to authorities.

A number of African women have claimed that they underwent terrifying voodoo rituals in Nigeria before they were trafficked into Europe on a promise of work or gaining an education. Sometimes, traffickers will find a corrupt religious official to "sanction" their abuses, or will threaten to expose the victims' "sins" to their loved ones and sometimes they even use Voodoo, a religion mostly followed in Africa and the Caribbean, to enslave these women. The followers of Voodoo believe in the power of such rituals to destroy their souls are are very vulnerable to such abuses. In our quest to find some offbeat news this week we discovered this story from Germany. Around 250 naked shoppers turned up at a supermarket on the German/Danish border a couple of days ago in order to shop for free! And when we say naked... we mean totally NAKED. The owners of the new supermarket said that the first 100 customers who showed up at the grand opening in the nude would receive a basket of free groceries worth €270 (£220 / $340). Customers were so excited that they even camped out the night before to make sure they were the first in line. The manager of the new 'Priss' store, Nils Sterndorff, was shocked at the success of the offer, stating: "I never thought a hundred people would come, I thought maybe more like ten." In fact the there were so many naked shoppers that the police had to let them into the store in groups of 20. The police estimated that there were 250 in all. The Director of Bulgaria's National Museum of History, Bozhidar Dimitrov shockingly charged that FYROM's secret service is responsible for stealing the relics of St. John the Baptist from the town Sliven where they were apparently set on public display. The silver and gold reliquary, a personal gift from Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, apparently containing the relics of St John the Baptist had been returned to the town of Sozopol with one missing bone. The news was reported in mid April by "24 Chassa" (24 Hours) daily and other such media agents citing Sliven Bishop Yoanikiy. He says the theft occurred while the relics were displayed at the Sliven church "St Dimitar." Father Ivan, from the St. St. Cyril and Methodius in Sozopol, where the relics are housed permanently, had notified as early as April 5 that the content of the reliquary was not returned intact from Sliven.
The remains were apparently uncovered on July 28, 2010, by a team of archaeologists, led by Prof. Kazimir Popkonstantinov during excavations of the floor of the medieval monastery on Saint Ivan island, near Bulgaria's historical, coastal town of Sozopol. They were placed in a sealed reliquary buried next to a tiny urn inscribed with St. John's name and his birth date.
In Skopje, the Interior Ministry did not want to comment on Dimitrov's allegations.
The remains of St. John the Baptist, according to Dimitrov, were discovered on a small island in the Black Sea, near the town of Sozopol and many claim that they are authentic.
His Bulgarian counterparts, on the other hand, are criticizing him for these allegations and note that he is playing on the religious sentiment of the general public with the aim of finding his own five minutes of fame.
Whatever the reason... this whole thing sounds and is totally absurd.

Incredible but absolutely true. Following the "sale of Greece" on E-bay another citizen with a bizarre sense of humor decided to sell his vote for the upcoming national elections! A reader on the military news site onalert.gr stated that he actually went in and "clicked" -for fun- and the vote was actually being auctioned.

This next story might sound like a belated April Foo;'s Day joke but its real. Believe it or not foils some wise crack put the whole country of Greece on E-bay and began the auction at 1,525 and has managed to get bids that reached as much as $77,000. The "item" Greece was taken down by E-Bay at this address (click here) but the military site defencenet was able to snap a quick photo (as proof) as well as has included the link to the "items'" site.The damage nonetheless was done.. Greece was actually on sale for several hours.

Obviously we here in Greece will take this as a joke on the part of the seller... and we are certain that he and his friends probably had a good laugh in poking fun of a country that is standing on the verge of total collapse... but we want him to know that we are not laughing because we take it is a direct insult to our country and to its great people.

In our quest to find some sort of offbeat news this week, we discovered that residents in Trikala are fighting back at the "system" through common sense thinking with the copyright of Karagouna!
As most of you know all music shops, cafeterias, clubs and entertainment centers that play music in Greece are required to pay royalties to AEPI, but in these troubled times every penny counts and since AEPI is not lowering its fares, the residents in this small town decided enough is enough. This seems to be the reason why shopkeepers warned AEPI to come to its senses or they will take the case to court.
A report on trikalanews said at a Town Hall meeting the come back line that stole the show at a recent Town Hall meeting over the matter was given by the town's vice-mayor Theodore Spanos.

A male resident of Kazakhstan made headlines when he decided to order a bouquet of a million red roses in an effort to win back the affection of his wife after they engaged in a heated argument about their immediate families.
The man, who is apparently a resident of Kyzylorda, found in the southern part of Kazakhstan apparently made the order from a flower shop in Almaty, the largest city in the country, and luckily for him he received a healthy discount, the news agency Novosti-Kazakhstan said in a report.
The owner of the flower shop told the Express-K newspaper that he was shocked by the order, but nonetheless very pleased. According to the newspaper, 90 percent of "Dutch" roses in fact normally arrive in Kyzylorda from Ecuador, China and Uzbekistan. The remaining 10 percent of the flowers are grown in Kazakhstan. "But for such an impressive order, we will ship in roses from Holland," the shop owner said.
According to local press, one rose in the city is priced from 500 to 1,000 tenge (USD 3.5-7). On holidays, the cost of one flower grows up to 2,000 tenge (about $15). Thus, the bouquet of apology will cost several million dollars, excluding the discounts, added BNews.kz.
Move over Marie Curie, Indira Gandhi, Margret Thatcher and Angela Merkel...Greece's Julia Alexandratou has decided to run for prime minister. Yes you heard correctly folks, Greece's Queen of porn recently formed her own political party and according to press reports will now run in the next national elections.
Julia is a Greek socialite, media personality, glamour model, singer, actress, and pornographic actress. In 2002, at age 16, she won the beauty pageant title "Miss Young" in Greece. Four years later, she apparently won the title "Miss Greece International 2006" at the Miss Star Hellas beauty pageant.
In 2010, a controversial porn flick featuring Alexandratou was released and created controversy since she denied having knowledge that it was filmed. Later on of course she admitted that she was paid for her participation in the film. One year later she attracted even more controversy after the release of a second pornographic video
After trying out a career in music, and television entertainment, Julia now wants to be a politician and from what was announced her party political party "PANO" (or the Panhellenic Indignant and Ecologist Movement) says that it wants to be active on all political levels, because as its poster says it does not forget and does not forgive!. Julia has also said that she actually believes people will vote for her just to state their reaction to the current situation.
If she doesn't make it to Parliament, then there is always Hollywood, or the American porn industry which is said to be her next stop if her political career is cut short!
Now before you all begin criticising Julia's new venture, keep in mind that there are many former porn stars who later on became politicians. For instance one of the most famous porn stars-turned-politician of all time is none other than Italy's "La Cicciolina, as well as Hungarian born Ilona Staller who was apparently elected as a member of the Italian parliament in 1987. Oh and let's not forget porn actress Milly D'Abbraccio: who ran for a

Think this is just a "European thing", well, think again! North America, and more specifically the US has its own stories as well. One example is Mary Carey who apparently started her porn career with Playboy TV and contested the 2003 gubernatorial elections in California as a publicity stunt. She polled 11,179 votes and came tenth in a 135 candidate race. And then we have Stormy Daniels who apparently created a media frenzy when she decided to contest the 2010 Senate election in Louisiana and run against Sen. David Vitter!!! Also, we have Melody Damayo who is better known as Mimi Miyagi, who is an exotic Filipina porn star who moved to the US when she was a child. Melody was said to have retired from the adult entertainment industry and then she unsuccessfully contested the 2006 Nevada gubernatorial elections but she lost so she decided to return to porn!

In our quest to find some pretty interesting offbeat news we learned that the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) on Monday imposed a fine of 202.4 million euros on the owner of a gas station in Siteia, Crete, over charges that he illegally traded in more than 103 million liters of heating oil from January to May 2011. The Panhellenic Federation of Fuel Station Owners and Oil Traders (POPEK) dismissed the charges, noting that if it was true then the particular gas station owner is responsible for selling FIVE PERCENT of all the heating oil used in the country that year!!!
POPEK attributed the case to a fault in the Hephaestus system, designed by the Finance Ministry to monitor motor and heating fuel sales in an effort to clamp down on illegal trade. The association representing gas station owners also said that SDOE has imposed fines against 205 gas station on Crete alone, 34 of which are for over 100,000 euros.

Airlines are getting set to launch a special campaign against over-weight people and are planning to tax every excessive gram of weight we have on our bodies. The "stupid" if not "insulting" idea to profit from people who are overweight has not found much support, but there are some airlines such as Quantas and Air France who actually like the idea, while companies such as Australian airlines have declared that they would boycott the proposal altogether.
Former economist of Qantas airline (Australia) Tony Webber said that heavy people should pay for their excessive weight just like everyone pays extra for excess luggage. According to him, airplanes burn more fuel if there are overweight passengers on board.
Lawyers and human rights activists are obviously against the idea and have now joined the discussion on this ridiculous proposal. Everyone agreed that ideas such as these are discriminating and no one had the right to raise the fees for their services on the base of some one's appearance or weight.
