Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis held a 12-minute chat with US President Barack Obama on Thursday afternoon (EST) at the White House during the annual event honoring Greek Independence Day. US VP Joe Biden was also present at the event, as was Archbishop Demetrios of America and a delegation of Greek officials, including Attica regional government Rena Dourou.
A few photos of the event were posted on Twitter by Greek-American journalist Apostolis Zoupaniotis, with a couple of photos showing both Varoufakis and Obama conversing in an informal manner.
According to a dispatch from the state news agency in Greece, Obama and Varoufakis agreed that they can find practical ways to avoid destabilisation either by accident or because of uncontrolled processes. Moreover, both sides expressed the need for flexibility.
On his part, the US President expressed the support of himself and of his government and assured that the cooperation will continue.
Varoufakis said that the US President did not point his finger to us nor did he tell the Greek government what to do. He said that Greece must be absolutely committed to its goal and perfectly integrated in the process in which it participates with the IMF-ECB-EU, while he added that foreign forces ought to help.
Referring to the negotiations with the partners, Varoufakis underlined that there is never a key date, all things should be viewed in combination and cumulatively and added that on April 24 there will be no resolution, there will be progress.
