Ship Carrying 700 migrants Spotted off Crete

The Hellenic Coast Guard mobilized on Monday after discovering a freighter under Kiribati flag, the BARIS, which was sailing about thirty nautical miles off the southeast coast of Crete.

According to press reports, the 77-meter motor ship is carrying more than 700 illegal immigrants, and appears to have suffered some sort of mechanical failure. Currently the freighter ship is in international waters but close enough to be handled by Greek authorities.

This is probably why four nearby merchant ships and the HYDRA Navy vessel headed to the area on Monday in what some reports note was to assist in the rescue operation.

Even though it was reported that there is no danger of the freighter sinking, the strong north-northwesterly winds in the area are apparently making the rescue operation very difficult.

The reports in Athens claim that the ship may have left from an African country, but its intended destination was not Greece but rather Italy.
