Antonis Kantas, is the former deputy director of the Ministry of Defence’s procurement office (period 1996-2002). He was arrested at the end of December 2013 in the course of an investigation into illegal payments from defence ministry armament programs made to a Singapore bank account. He is accused of money-laundering and bribery.
According to press reports, the sum of roughly 14 million dollars was transferred to the above account from offshore companies that appear to be owned by Kantas.
After his arrest, Kantas began giving investigating magistrates a wealth of information regarding the numerous bribes alleged to have been paid to him as well as to other Greek defence officials, and he even began naming the names of all those involved in this massive billion Euro scandal. Presently, he is cooperating with the investigation with the hope of receiving a more lenient treatment from the courts.
As a result of his testimony, authorities arrested the former managing director of Skaramanga Shipyarads, Sotiris Emmanouil, as well as a former associate of ex-Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, Yiannis Beltsios, on charges of accepting bribes and laundering money in connection to allegations of bribery for arms contracts. Shipowner and MIE company representative Michalis Matados, was also accused of bribery and money laundering, and appeared before investigators as well.
Meanwhile, it was made known that at the beginning of February Swiss prosecutors are going to receive testimonies from those already accused on kickbacks, including former defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, his wife Vicky Stamatis and even his cousin Nikos Zigras (who recently also began pointing the finger at former Defence Minister under the PASOK/Simitis government Yiannos Papantoniou).
