The center of Athens has transformed into a war zone. Anarchists, and rioters are currently clashing with police forces on the fifth anniversary of the killing of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos.
The latter was shot dead five years ago by a police official, in an incident that sparked Greece's worst riots in history. Thousands of rioters (mostly anarchists) marched through the center of the city screaming out "cops, pigs, murderers" (referring to the police) while holding banners reading "Alexis lives".
The riot police was deployed to the Athens center right away and reports claim that they have also secured the area around the Greek parliament.
The rioters threw Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects at the officers who in return "answered" with tear gas.
Presently there is intense rioting near the Polytechnic University up to the Exarcheia district.
The 2008 Greek riots started on December 6, 2008, when Grigoropoulos was killed by two policemen in the Exarcheia district of central Athens. The murder of the young student resulted in large protests and demonstrations, which escalated to widespread rioting, with numerous rioters damaging property and engaging riot police with Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects. Demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities, including Thessaloniki. It also sparked solidarity demonstrations and/or riots in more than 70 cities around the world.
