Press reports at the weekend claim that a cargo ship that was sailing off the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese, or more specifically near the islet of Imia, was escorted to the port of Symi for inspection after it was discovered that it was transporting/carrying a huge amount of weapons. At present it has been led to Rhodes for further inspection.
After the inspection of the cargo ship, (flagged under Sierra Leon) it was discovered that it was transporting a whopping 20,000 AK 47 guns (Kalashnikov rifles) and various containers full of explosives were also said to have been found.
This ship had troubled authorities in the past for drug trafficking, but it looks like it decided to alter its cargo.
Quite interestingly, an electronic system indicated that the ship was bound for Tripoli, in Libya, while its captain said that it was on its way to Eskenteroum Turkey. Other reports claim that it was bound for Syria.
The Minister of Shipping, Maritime Affairs, and Aegean Mr. Varvitsiotis was immediately notified.
