POLITICAL COUP - Smell Of National Elections - Troika Wants A "Trimmed" Parliament

There are some officials in the government who are suspiciously working overtime in endorsing extreme theories about our democracy and are literally committing a political coup of our parliament. Not surprising, and given the fact that PASOK drove this whole country into the arms of the Troika, PASOK MP and Deputy Minister of Interior L.Grigorakos said earlier on Saturday that "there is no problem if Golden Dawn members resign because Parliament will continue to operate."

His statement is not only dangerous, it is also undemocratic. Obviously this is something that is practically impossible and totally against the Greek Constitution.

Secondly this theory (which we repeat is being endorsed by specific circles within the government - mostly of a PASOK nature) is also being rejected by the leftist SYRIZA party.

The only party which feels that it might gain from all this chaos, is the Independent Greek party since it hopes to attract GD supporters who might abandon their support for the far-right party following their political execution.

In fact, various government leaks, (stemming from the think-tanks that support the Troika) are also supporting the following extremely dangerous, for any democracy, theory:

The Greek Parliament can operate even if the members of the Golden Dawn party resign. Under the Greek Constitution, Parliament can operate with less than 300 deputies (the Constitution speaks of 200 to 300 seats). So the seats of Golden Dawn can remain empty. In other words a "trimmed" parliament.

If Golden Dawn party members resign on masse (as threatened by party leader Nikos Michaloliakos) then a law can be drafted that will ban by-elections from being held, as noted by PASOK Constitutionalist Mr. Alivizatos.

This last theory is not only dangerous and undemocratic, it also goes against everything in the Greek Constitution and it should frighten all of us because it means that we are not functioning as a democracy. The fact that it is being endorsed by PASOK does not surprise us at all, since its leader Evangelos -The Large- Venizelos has a knack of playing with the Constitution. Remember the controversial law that gives Deputies immunity?

SYRIZA has already rejected this proposal in principle.

Not even the Greek Junta supported such extreme ideologies.

Has our government gone completely mad? Can't they see where they are driving this country? Do they actually believe that citizens will sit back and allow PASOK to endorse Troika tactics on how we should run our democracy? They have another thing coming to them if they do.

Some members of SYRIZA also left it to be understood (or leaked) that Greece is already in a pre-election period, with the most likely election date being that of the last Sunday of October or November 1st (that is of course if we witness mass resignations of Golden Dawn MPs on Monday).

But no one is answering the obvious question: How is the Greek Parliament going to operate when six of its members are currently in custody?

Obviously it will create a political turmoil and if the present political crisis gets out of hand -and the Troika sticks its fangs deeper into our democratic system- then Antonis Samaras might just be forced to hold early elections, and some claim the most likely dates would be Sunday, November 3 or December 1st.
