59 Medals For Greece At 2013 Mediterranean Games!

Greece conquered a total of 59 medals and was ranked 6th at the 2013 Mediterranean Games that concluded in Mersin, Turkey on June 30. Specifically, Greece was awarded 15 gold, 18 silver and 26 bronze medals, bringing her 6th among 24 participating countries, while Italy topped the rank, host Turkey came second and France third.

Six of the medals were won by the athletics team, - four of which for jumping events-. (Louis Tsatoumas and Konstantinos Baniotis won the men’s Long Jump and High Jump, while Stella Ledaki and Athanasia Perra won the women’s pole vault and triple jump. Sprinters got their share with Kostas Douvalidis winning the 110m hurdles and Lykourgos Tsakonas the 200m sprint race.

Gymnastics champions Lefteris Kosmidis and Lefteris Petounias also topped their events, swimming brought two golden medals and rowing another two in rowing, Maria Pervolaraki was gold in wrestling, while David Kavelasvili’s won two golden medals in weight lifting.

The Mediterranean Games are held every four years, under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee and the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), bringing together athletes from three continents.
