Golden Dawn party spokesman and MP Elias Kasidiaris was acquitted of all charges on Thursday following his trial at an Athens courthouse. The Golden Dawn MP was accused of being part of a group of five people that apparently attacked a student in 2007. Reports about the incident, which occured at the Athens Polytechnic, claimed that the student was first mugged, then brutally beaten, stabbed and then had his identity card stolen.
A witness to the crime (and rumored member of the SYRIZA party) had said at the time that the students' assailants were driven away in Kasidiaris’s car.
The judge presiding over the case said that the whole indictment against Mr. Kasidiaris was based on the testimony of Mrs. Mary Vavagiannis and was weak because she could not confirm that the perpetrators fled with the car, that allegedly belonged to Kasidiaris.
Kasidiaris' immunity was lifted by his fellow MPs in order for him to stand trial. Since 2007 he has denied any involvement in the incident and has expressed sympathy for the victim.
