A search and rescue drill, entitled "Hercules 2012", takes place on Thursday, for the first time at sea, with the participation of Cypriot forces and Hermes Airports services. The purpose of the exercise is to test the ability of the search and rescue system to respond to an aviation accident.
According to the scenario of the drill, a civilian aircraft carrying 110 passengers ditches into the sea off Larnaca International Airport, following mechanical failure.
Police and aviation administration helicopters, a department of forestry aircraft, ships and naval vessels, the port police, the department of fisheries and the disaster management special unit are also taking part in the drill, along with Larnaca civil defence rescue team, the medical services of the Larnaca General Hospital, the Department of Civil Aviation, the Fire Service and the Larnaca Police Department.
