This is not a good development, because if Greece does not react then Turkey will establish rights in these areas and simply put all proclamations of Greece's EEZ will basically go down the toilet after that. With this move, Ankara is attempting to de facto "erase" the existence of Megisti and Stroggili (Kastelorizo) -in regards to Greece's Continental shelf- but the possibilities of its EEZ as well.
With coordinates 36 00.00 N, 029 33.00 E, Turkish surveys will conduct research about 7.3 miles south of Megisti, which is marginally outside Greek territorial waters but within the Greek continental shelf according to the NAVTEX 570.
Moreover, and based on the coordinates 36 15.00 N, 028 30.00 E 35 30.00 N, 028 30.00 E, the Turkish ship is expected to conduct surveys off the eastern coast of Rhodes (Faliraki and Afandou) and east of the sea area between Rhodes and Karpathos.
The R / V Bilim-2 already sailed off the coast of Silifke in Turkey on Wednesday and is heading to Mersina where it was reported that it will begin conducting surveys. The ship was within Turkish territorial waters opposite to the illegally Turkish occupied Rizokarpaso. The The research vessel R / V BILIM-2 was to begin surveys there on Thursday and as reported they are set to continue until September 30, but the ship is expected to move east of Rhodes and up the Gulf of Alexandretta.
More exactly, the Turkish vessel will be moving east of Faliraki in Rhodes, east and south of Karpathos Kastelorizo, or in simple words to the very limits of Greece's territorial waters. Ankara's intention is to send a clear message to Greece that it will not back down and plans to materialize on its threats.
In March, when Turkey decided t set off the Piri Reis surveyor ship in the Northern Aegean, it had supported the argument that "oceanographic surveys do not require the disclosure of the coastal state" and that it did not recognize the Greek continental plateau which in its opinion has not been defined.
Given the above information, the question now is what will Greece do about this new and obviously very dangerous provocation? Will it finally react to Turkish threats? Are the Greek Armed Forces in a state to assert, enforce and protect Greek interests? Does our government have the political will to do it, and we not only referring to the ruling government, but the main opposition as well.
Stay tuned frappers... this is going to get ugly.
