Illegal Migrants Found On Evros River Islet

Thirty illegal migrants, 29 men and a woman, were found stranded on an Evros River islet near the village of Nea Vyssa, on the border with Turkey, authorities said on Tuesday. The entire group was rescued from the spot. In an effort to cross the frontier from Turkey into Greece, the illegal migrants -- who by their own account include nine Algerians, eight Syrians, six Moroccans, five Palestinians and two Afghanis -- found themselves stranded on the islet until spotted by Greek police patrolling along the river bank. The Evros River continues to attract migrant smugglers ferrying mostly Third World illegal migrants into Greece from neighboring Turkey, a situation that has generated enormous problems in Greece amid a punishing economic crisis and caused a growing backlash against illegal immigration.(AMNA)
