Illegal Immigrants Making Money By Tearing Apart DEH Transformers

Following the arrest of a crime organization made up of illegal immigrants, reported to be Pakistani nationalists, for dismantling and devastating electricity transformers in the prefecture of Messinia and then selling them illegally on the black market (causing thousands of euros in damage), police officials announced that a similar crime syndicate was just arrested in Laconia. According to reports, the criminals would tear apart the power transformers and then sell the copper and other metals separately to the highest bidder illegally.

In Karditsa another gang of illegal immigrants was apparently arrested after officials caught them plundering several power transformers for the copper as well as damaging two nearby water supply networks. The result: The Greek power corporation (DEH or PPC) suffered tremendous losses and the municipality Mouzaki suffered greatly as a result. But these perpetrators did not stop there. They also had the audacity to invade the municipality of Agnanterou and also destroy the electrical transformers there as well.

Up to now, many gypsies/nomads roaming around Greece were known for selling these metals on the black market, but now illegal immigrants have adopted the same criminal tactics and judging from the latest developments it is affecting many areas across the country. And if you think dismantling and destroying a transformer is not costly, well...  think again. According to one report in proto-thema the damage done by just one of these gangs surpassed 72,000 euros!

(Money of which will now be added to DEH's losses and cause reason for even higher hikes on our electricity bills.)
