Thousands of police officers have been deployed to be on their guard at this Sunday's March 25th parade in central Athens as well as in several other major cities across bid in the framework of maintaining public order. The parade that every year commemorates Greece’s Independence Day is this year going to be held under the shadow of the Troika and fears of violence. Shockingly some reports even said that sharp shooters were recruited, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Authorities on all levels will conduct routine searches for elements such as water bottles, yogurts, rocks, and other items that could be used against government officials.
And all this of course because the attacks against Greece's elite political system have increased dramatically by angry citizens who are enraged and suffering from the government's strict austerity campaign.
This is one of the reasons why authorities decided to tighten security in cities where central and local government officials are expected to make an appearance.
In Athens, security will be tight around the area where President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias and other dignitaries are set to participate (or in front of Parliament).
Meanwhile, the veterans of WWII said in an announcement that they will not be participating in this year's military parade in protest to the government's austerity drive. "We the disabled soldiers of war, (and the) ancestors to 1821 (war time fighters), have decided with the Confederation of Disabled War Victims in Greece to not march (in this year's military parade), because we are against the hard measures the government has taken against our people ".
