Financial Prosecutors Widen Probe Into Foreign Ministry Secret Funds

Financial prosecutor Grigoris Peponis has apparently ordered another investigation this time its into the foreign ministry secret funds for the period after 2009 when George Papandreou and Dimitris Droutsas served as foreign ministers.

The new order issued by prosecutor Peponis constitutes an expansion of the investigation already underway that concerns the period between 2004 and 2007 based on evidence presented by Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) Parliamentary group leader Alexis Tsipras when called to testify at the end of January.

The relevant investigation, according to a report from the state news agency, was launched by the prosecutor last September after press reports claimed that "secret funds" allocated to various government ministries in the period 2004-2007 had gone more than 200 pct over budget, in certain cases exceeding 1,000 pct.

A revealing article that was published in mid December in the "Pontiki" newspaper, and which was featured here on hellasfrappe, claimed that Papandreou's effort to remain in the leadership of PASOK is associated with his own personal fear of being accused for totally destroying the Greek economy, (No... really???) The article we had featured in December said that not this fear is not only related to civil punishment, which he and his party are already experiencing and suffering from but it is mostly related to the possibility of a formal judicial investigation into the legitimacy of his political activities while in office (including his time at the foreign ministry).
