As Romania's leadership gets set to seek help from the Troika, performing Verdi's "Va pensiero" (a song that recollects the story of Jewish exiles from Judea after the loss of the First Temple in Jerusalem) the cast and crew of the Lyric Opera house in Cluj invigorated the crowd this past Sunday calling on their fellow countrymen to stand and defend the honor of their nation through a simple song. It was a clear message to revolt. The song has been regarded by some scholars as an anthem for patriots, who seek to unify their country and free it from foreign control (the chorus's theme of exiles
singing about their homeland. Meanwhile, a day earlier the far-right Jobbik party called
for Hungary to leave the bloc, adding to pressure on the government
which is seeking a funding deal with the European Union (EU) and the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avert insolvency. Earlier in the day a dozen people, including a cameraman and four policemen,
were injured in clashes with
demonstrators. Hellenes might not have Verdi.... but we have Theodorakis. That is why hellasfrappe posted two videos. The first video shows the heartwarming response by the crowd when the opera singers began to perform the song "Va pensiero" and then we present Theodorakis' infamous song on revolution titled "tha simanoun oi kambanes". Enjoy.
Translation in English
Fly, thought, on wings of gold;
go settle upon the slopes and the hills,
where, soft and mild, the sweet airs
of our native land smell fragrant!
Greet the banks of the Jordan
and Zion's toppled towers...
Oh, my country so beautiful and lost!
Oh, remembrance so dear and so fatal!
Golden harp of the prophetic seers,
why dost thou hang mute upon the willow?
Rekindle our bosom's memories,
and speak to us of times gone by!
Mindful of the fate of Jerusalem,
give forth a sound of crude lamentation,
or may the Lord inspire you a harmony of voices
which may instill virtue to suffering.
