Minister of Defence Demetris Eliades met on Monday with Australia`s High Commissioner to Cyprus Trevor Peacock, who reiterated his country`s recognition of and support to the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. The High Commissioner also pointed to the need for respect of international law, noting that he hoped that tension in the area would be defused and that the Cyprus problem would be resolved.
He said that respect of international law and human rights and democratic principles were common values between the two countries, adding that there was a large Cypriot community living and creating in Australia. Eliades briefed Peacock on the latest developments regarding explorations for natural gas in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone, noting that Cyprus is determined to exercise its sovereign rights in a responsible manner, abiding by international law.
