Moscow to Ankara: UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus must be respected

Russia called on the Prime Minister of Turkey to respect the resolutions of the UN Security Council and not to recognize any Cypriot state other than the Cyprus Republic. “We have noticed the quite harsh statements by Erdogan on the situation in Cyprus during the visit carried out in the north of the island,”- said the official spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry of Russia Alexandr Lukasevic. “The Russian Federation supports the strict compliance by all member states of the UN of the adopted decisions on any issue at global or regional level, including on Cyprus, -pointed out Lukasevic.

The impression in diplomatic circles over Lukasevic statements is that for the first time, in many years, the Russian Foreign Ministry was not confined to standard formulations, but, indirectly and clearly recalled the existence of the illegal pseudo-state occupation (relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council 541 of 1983 and 550 of 1984), It also reiterated that there are members of the international community that do “not to recognize any Cypriot state other than the Republic, to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus and not to facilitate and not to give in any way help the separatist formation in the north of the island of Cyprus. "

The report on defence.net said that Moscow sources said that the Russian armed forces will not remain indifferent if the security of the Republic of Cyprus is it endangered “and (we) have ways to make this clear!"

This last statement apparently left Turkish authorities speechless since they believed that with the development of good economic relations with Russia they would be throwing water into their wine in regards to the Cyprus issue.

Lukasevic further said that "Russia as a permanent member of UNSC UN has provided and will continue to provide support to a just, lasting and universal settlement in the interests of all Cypriots, based on relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, of the intra-high level agreements (for the years 1977 and 1979) and voluntary, without external pressure, consent of the Cypriot communities themselves.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated its support for UN resolutions, said Lukasevic, noting that "only this approach will allow the reunification of Cyprus based on a bi-communal bi-zonal federation with a single sovereignty, citizenship and international legal status. " "It is obvious that Moscow wants to show clearly that Cyprus is under high diplomatic and strategic protection" he added.
